I dunno. If you're so worried about "STUFF" happening, perhaps you should take up a safer hobby.

The only hard part about gassing up in the seat is reaching the dang credit card entry panel and the pump; takes a little trial and error to figure out the best place to park it.

Personally, I liked the way they do it in Scotland. Pull up to the pump, fill up, then ride the bike away from the pump, park it, go in and pay. Very trusting over there. Made me feel like there may be hope for mankind after all.

Sidestand for me. I only know of one person who stays on to fill, he has a BMW HP2 with a 3 gallon tank. When we long distance tour he does this to get the max he can in the tank.

Hi all, here in Australia it is illegal to sit on the bike and fill up your tank. so I generally put centre stand down to fill up. (I work part time at a service station and part of training was to tell riders to only fill up while off the bike)

Not really trusting, although it's common to pull up to the shop to pay if there are people waiting behind you at the pump all stations in Britain have CCTV so if you run they have your plates.

Dude- you ride a motorcycle, you should think about stuff happening if you want to be a old guy someday. I have seen strange things happen around gas stations.
Not only do I want to keep big Jim and the twins fuel free, but what is going to happen to the bike if you need to get off in a hurry. Doubt you will have time to put down the sidestand.

I get off my bike and put it on the center stand. I wear my gloves to protect the tank from the nozzle. Either way you should get off the bike.

I have mentioned this before on another thread. But once when I was racing in the Mini class. (KX 80) I took a nasty spill and the gas cap some how came loose. At the time we were running race gas, not sure of the octane level.

I ran the entire race, 45 mins with this horrible burning sensation in my crotch and thigh area.

It took a couple laps before the gas soaked through my riding pants and slider shorts, but when it did...

I finished 3rd and never want to ever experience that again.

I ALWAYS get off the bike.

IMO I would rather just side stand the bike, get off it and walk to the pump and be off the bike, in the unlikely event that somthing happens, i like to have the option to run like a bat out of hell away from it. Also gives you a moment to stretch out your legs and such.

Please, remember while gassing up that you should take care not to let your cigarette fall from you mouth. Also, watch the tip and flick any excess ash off to the SIDE before you begin the pumping. Personally, I recommend that you don't smoke while filling up your tank. And please, don't forget if you have parked your lit cigarette on top of the pump during the process. This is dangerous because if you forget and leave it there this could pose a fire hazard for the next motorist who pulls up and doesn't realize that it's there!

Good thing you didn't get gas at the station I was at in TX this past weekend, then. Some moron set the lock mechanism on the nozzle, so when I lifted the handle and then selected the fuel grade, as I turned toward the bike, gas immediately began gushing out of the nozzle. That would not have been pretty if I'd been sitting on the bike.

I always get off the bike and leave it on the sidestand (I don't care about squeezing those few extra ounces in with bike upright on center stand). I have to put my tankbag on the seat, anyway, to get to the filler. Gives me a chance to clean my visor, take a swig of water or Gatorade, and chat up the guy next to me who's intrigued by seeing a female rider. ;)

wow americans really are lazy! so lazy they cant even be bothered to hold a trigger in to fill the tank?! thats a whole new level of lazy!! You dont get tigger locks here in UK, seems a bit of a stupid idea tbh, because the above can happen, and plus, holding a trigger is hardly exhausting :p

I sit on mine and fill it up btw, keeps it nice and level :)

Cool poll, interested to see all the different answers to such a simple question

Woah there mate. Back the lory up a sec. No one said anything about pump handle locks are only for "lazy americans". We also had them in Canada. Ever have to fill up a large truck with petrol? It's nice to lock the pump so you don't have to stand there like some prat for 10min while the tank fills. Also allows you to have your hands free so you can light up a fag! ;)

Besides, he wasn't going to use the handle lock to fill his bike tank; some idiot before him had shut the pump off with the handle lock still engaged.

Canada used to have pump handle locks too, until too many retards would leave them engaged and spray gas everywhere so now we don't have them anymore; they are illegal. The reason for having pump handle locks in the first place was more for full serve gas stations so the one attendant could run around to several cars and "fill them up" at the same time.

BTW, a fueling tip for all you tank bag users. The fronts of the gas pumps are usually sheet metal.....so i slap my magnetic tank bag up against it while I fill my bike. It's a handy place to store the tank bag when still being seated on the bike while you fuel!

centerstand mostly while off the bike. sometimes sidestand. and once in a very while, sit and level. (if there is an attendant who comes up and hands me the pump handle and swipes my card for me). i prefer getting off and doing it myself but when your in jersey, pumping your own gas is illegal (but the attendant isnt going to stand there holding it for you) so at least they let you hold it yourself.

I never use a handle lock to fill my bike...that's just stupid and dangerous! However, I do use the lock to fill my truck's 22 gal gas tank, especially when the tank is nearly empty and the pumps are running really slow.

I sit on mine and fill it up btw, keeps it nice and level :)

And some motorcycle riders (like you) are so incredibly lazy they can't be bothered to actually get off their motorcycles to pump their gas.

Thanks for backing me up, Boneman! I'm a "she" not a "he," by the way.

I can see the rationale for banning pump locks in Canada, but that sure would make it hard for some folks who, as you say, have large tanks. Sometimes the pumps are very slow and I've found myself trying to fill my truck at a slow pump that was particularly stiff to hold and with a broken lock to boot!

That wouldn't work for me, I'd forget it and drive off, guaranteed. By placing it on my seat, I can't forget it! ;)

I guess some would rather take best route, practice best technique. For example, I'm not going to remove my tank per manual instructions in order to access battery, throttle bodies, etc. I'm not going to park at the farthest parking area if there's one just as good closer. Similarily, there's NO NEED to get off the bike to refuel..Yeah, yeah, some will say that this is dangerous, not practible, etc. Sorry, I don't subscribe. You call it laziness, I'll call it efficiency. The way some make it sound, maybe they should change into a fire suit and have assistants with extinguishers and first-aid kits nearby..maybe first call for a fire truck too.

Its all about logistics,

If you have a pump that takes a card and you have (more importantly) the leg length to sit on your bike whilst filling. Then of course you will do it.

I am a short arse, If I sat on my bike and filled it up, I would get a quarter of a tank lol. I get of every time and stick it on the center stand. There are also fewer self service pumps in the UK so you have to get off your bike to pay anyhow.

I like the bike level so that I can fill it to within about 1" below the cap. This probably makes me lazy, trying to squeeze in as much as I can as I hate filling it up.

Today I got 18 liters in, I had covered 23 miles on reserve so it had to be done.

It seems some people here are easily confused between being 'Lazy' and being 'Efficient'!! :spank:

Why would I want to take 6 steps in order to do something that can be done in 3? I don't call that being lazy, I call that being efficient.

Why spend 5 mins filling my tank when I can do it in 2 mins and be on my way? Why do I need to strip down and take my helmet and gloves off, just to put gas in my tank??!?

It annoys me to no end when on a group ride, why it takes some people twice as long to do the same thing (put gas in their tank) that others do in half that time!!
