WOT 1st into 2nd, clutch slipping or something else?

stop using your clutch when your riding aggressively

slight pressure on gear lever, slightly let off gas, more pressure on lever to shift up

dont touch the clutch

Fuel:
Well, I've put a K&N filter and drilled the exhaust (next week I'll be installing Leo Vince, which is in the mail). I do not have a Power Commander. Is this the kind of fuel problem you suspect (air/fuel ratio)?

Ignition:
I've never checked the condition of the spark plugs. Is this the ignition problem that you're thinking about?

Please excuse my noob questions, but I won't learn if I don't ask, so I try to ask when I don't know..

I wouldnt think either of those would cause it but on gas engines you have to have suck (intake/fuel) bang (spark/ignition) blow (exhaust) and from what your describing it seems like your bike is hesitateing a bit between shifts, as if maybe its taking the fuel a little bit longer then normal to get in after letting off the gas and then hitting it again, but I would say your clutch is fine

He tried that and it was still doing it

What could cause that, any ideas?

Maybe some dirty ingectors or something similar, not to sure to be honest. Try running some fuel cleaner through it and see if you notice a difference. If it was the clutch you should be having problems in 6th gear first then working your way down unless something in the linkage is not letting it engage when the lever is (cable binding) plus you would see the rpms moving down before the clutch catches when slipping, or if not you would feel something like turbo lag. It shouldnt be holding steady rpms and stedy speed if slipping

Just for sh*ts and giggles, pull the K&N out, then take the bike around the block and whack the throttle open. See if the hesitation goes away.

If this started right after you installed the filter, changed the oil and filter, and did some other maintenance, I would be suspicious of the work performed.....

Not meant as criticism, just school of hard knocks experience.

You mean run around the block with no filter at all?!

Well, I replaced the air-filter, changed the oil and oil filter. There isn't much room for error in this maintenance work, is there?!

If you want help pulling the clutch and are in the Toronto area let me know, really simple job once you've done it. Haven't read all the replys, but did you notice the problem before the oil change or only after?

Thanks Regder, I might take you up on that offer :) I live in Hamilton, but commute to Toronto every day. I can't be sure if it was doing it before the oil change...I think not, but that's the thing---not sure. In all cases, I think the first thing I'm going to try is to change the oil to Amsoil 10w40. I intend to ride the bike every now and then in the upcoming cold days (as long as it's dry), so I'll put some good oil in first, see if the problem disappears. I'll report back to this thread once I do this (beginning of next week I believe). Thanks everyone for the advice, suggestions, there were some really good ideas thrown in this thread. Also, I will try the fuel cleaner if the oil change doesn't do the trick, and only then I'll consider the clutch.

Good luck, let me know if you need a hand.

P.S a set of cheap grip heater elements are the best investment you can make for riding in the cooler weather

RJ has good point. If the K&N air filter is too wet with oil it could be too restrictive (assuming that was the path you were thinking of??).

Remember at WOT engine vacuum is very low, but the velocity through the filter should be hi - unless its restricted. So the engine could feasibly fall on its face.

What is the altitude where you live and ride (elevation)? Have you ran more than tank of gas with it like this?

Few tanks of gas through the bike since the time I noticed this. Also, I did the oil change and put Amsoil 10w40. No change. Revving in 1st to 10k+ => pull clutch, let go off throttle a notch => pop into 2nd => release clutch and immediately full WOT => 1/2 to 1 second RPM and acceleration steady, then bang, back in business..

Alright, it's 1am and I just went out to do some tests on the highway (pulling off in the shoulder a number of times and then accelerating to figure out what's going on).

I could not reproduce the problem when shifting without the clutch. I know I wrote before that it was doing it, but mind you that time was the first time I attempted to shift without the clutch, so maybe I didn't know what I was doing.

When I came home, upon close observation in the garage, I noticed something that seems strange to me: when I squeeze the clutch lever and then release it, if I push out the lever with my fingers, I can see on the right side (the other end of the cable) that it is released a tiny bit more---just a couple of mm maybe. It almost feels like as though the spring that is supposed to push it back into place is just a tiny bit less tense than it should...

Could that be the problem? Once again, it's just a tiny bit, but I'm thinking---wot in 1st is almost about 60 mph, maybe the wind is pushing a bit on the lever and thus it takes a second to fully disengage?!

that's just some freeplay, a bit of freeplay is actually needed to keep the clutch from being slightly disengaged and slipping

As posted earlier, the clutch cable should be lubricated in either case.

While its out of the upper clutch perch, check for free movement in and out. You may have some fraying going on, especially since it hasn't been serviced...

I use a pressure tool that clamps around the end of the cable, similar to this one: ( Cable Luber Competition Accessories ) and use cable specific lube. I'll lube it at least every 1,000 miles and can feel the difference..

Yes, I mean run without any filter in place for a few minutes. Make sure you use a clean cloth and wipe the inside of the air box down, to remove any debris that might get sucked into the engine.

K&N oiled filters are sometimes over-oiled by their owners on first installation. Too much oil clogs the filter.

Interesting point, I actually never lubricate my clutch cable, or throttle cable for that matter. Original cable lasted me 32k km, replacement is at 45k km and still going strong.

I'm sure if I did lube the cable, it would be a bit smoother. Works just fine unlubed though. Less chance of dirt and junk building up on the lube too.

That should be good enough for you to want to lube them up....the fact that they only lasted 32k i know plently of ppl who keep them properly lube and have never changed them with 100,000+ miles not km

I don't think it's a lube issue, I think it's a FZ6 clutch cable issue. I'm far from the only one to have to change it so early, if you search the board there are many others.

Regardless, the cable cost me I think $60 and fourty five minutes to put it in. Cheap enough for me not to bother to lube it
