Hi,

I found this set of 3 - 14mm, 17mm & 19mm hex sockets on ebay for $19.50. This will fit my 3/8" torque wrench, but I am concerned that the hex bit may be too short to remove the front wheel.

They state the tool is 28mm long (just over 1"). I believe that is overall length, not just hex bit length. Do you think the length will be an issue?

I'm partial to this set, as I can use the other 2 bits to work on my car.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks

Well, any socket, no matter how long, will only go into the axle about 14mm (I just measured it). And the socket I used to get my front wheel off successfully a couple of weeks ago is only 7mm long (the hex part that actually goes into the axle).

Here's a question I have: is 28mm the overall length of the socket, or just the hex part? I bet it's overall length, so if you can find out how long just the hex part is, and it's longer than 7mm, I'd say this will work for you.

As long as the bit goes in far enough to securely turn it without stripping it will work fine. I usually prefer shorter bits since they should be a little stronger and less likely to twist.

You can use a spark plug sock that has the nut on it to put a wrench on.

You just stick an extension in the socket from the other side and put the 3/4" or 19mm end into the axle. If you do a search on the forum you should find a thread on this. There are a couple of easy, cheap and very efficient ways to do this if you want to save a couple a bucks.

Hey! Take the money and buy something from our new Swag Store!

Anyone looking for a tool for removing the front wheel in the UK, Halfords sell one for just under a tenner in the motorbike section.
