Why do the 2012 Car Engines get better gas milage?

I just think that the Multidisplacment systems are a waste of R&D money and time which could better be put elsewhere.

I agree with that 100% IMHO I think they were all just a "gimmick" to bump sales and to appease the government and cafe laws until they can come up with something better. And the first car to have it (im pretty sure) was in 81 Cadillac with the l-62 v-8-6-4 system and yeah it sucked

Yeah that's the car I'm thinking of. The electronics of the time just couldn't switch fast enough between running on 4 6 or 8 cylinders. Customers hated it from what I've read.

Alot of it is with DI (direct injection) and small displacement boosted motors

I just bought a 2011 Ford Edge Awd with the 3.5 V6. I am getting 26.5 mpg on the highway with it at 72mph. They now offer the ecoboost 2.0. The hp/tq numbers aren't that much less than my V6 but they only offer it in Fwd and can't tow with it... Mine has Awd and can tow 3500 lbs... So that tells me that the 2.0 isn't up to par... I think they are on the right track with the ecoboost but they need to put more effort into it outside of the truck line...

Now if they would put the 3.5 ecoboost that is in the F-150 in the edge that would be great power wise, but I am getting better mpg with my naturally aspriated 3.5 than they are with the 3.5 eco... That doesn't make any sense.

Those were all throttle body injection. As in yank off the carb with floats and drop a TBI unit on the manifold. Didn't even have per cyl EFI for several more years. Ford took it a step further with direct fire injection right into the cylinder. This give very precise control of burn. No longer are they wetting the intake runners or the back of the intake valve for that matter.

Plus the use some kind of super sensor to detect crank rotation at a level that balances the ignition and injection such that acceleration of the crankshaft is butter smooth! Every firing pulse is balanced in harmony to make it very effcient.

I've been researching a new cage and was originally interested in a VW Tuareg with the 3.0 liter TDi V6. I liked the idea of the clean diesel, but I'm not sold on the required liquid Urea and DPF regen cycles. Also, there is no dealer support within 75 miles of my house.

The added low end torque for towing, and fuel economy did capture my interest though which led me to keep looking for something else.

My search has brought me to the Ecoboost line of engines from Ford. They're twin turbo charged and direct injected. They make greater horsepower and torque, deliver better fuel economy and don't have the added expense associated with Diesel engines. Gas is cheaper than diesel, and the oil changes use 5-6 quarts instead of 10+ like a typical diesel. No DEF fluid is required, and no DPF regen cycles are required.

My next cage (tow vehicle for my boat) will likely be an Ecoboost. I've actually been in contact with Ford asking them to make the 3.5 liter V6 Ecoboost and option on the new Explorers. 350 hp and 400+ pound feet of torque at 2,500 rpms is on par with small diesel engines without the weight and the extra maintenance expense.

The numbers you are talking about are in the f-150 they only offer a diesel in the super duty which is a 6.7 and that has 400 hp & 800 ft lb of torque.... I couldn't find the fuel mileage specs on this truck. I have lost touch with diesel trucks as the last one my dad had was a 05. Yes the diesel uses much more oil, but back then you could go about 3 times longer on that change...
