When's the last time you used a payphone?

I haven't seen one in a long time, now that I think about it. I hate to be a factory worker at a payphone manufacturer.

i see the boxes that are still mounted to the walls where they used to be, but for the past few years i have not actually even seen a phone in the box.

I always think to myself, "wouldn;t it look better to just take the whole box thing off the wall"

I still use payphones, perhaps because I don't have a cellphone. I just used a payphone not more than 2 weeks ago.

I'm happiest when I'm in places that don't have cell service, but I do like to check in with my wife from time to time when I'm travelling alone. Many small mountain towns have working-order payphones that I use for that purpose.

Though, many coin-op phones don't accept coins for long distance calls any more....

In August in Frankfurt, Germany. We were on our way back from Kuwait and I tried to call home. The jerks billed my CC THREE times for $53.00 a call! As much as I hate Citi now they did get me a refund on the calls.

The last time I saw a payphone was three years ago at my niece's wedding reception. There was an actual phone booth inside the restaurant. My grandson who was 5 a the time wandered off, found the phone booth, went in and closed the door. He then realized that he couldn't figure out how to get out. Instead of panicking, he picked up the phone, dialed 911 and told the 911 operator that he was stuck in the closet and couldn't get out! The 911 operator then informed the restaurant management who came to his rescue. The manager was not happy.

June 8th 2005. My wife had accidentally taken her phone and my phone when she left for work in the morning, so I had nothing. I was meeting someone for a job interview lunch meeting, and didn't know what he looked like, so I had to use a payphone to coordinate with him.

The handset seemed a lot scummier than I remember them being when I used to use them regularly. Did I just not think about it back then, or are pay phone handsets generally scummy?

Also, I had no idea how much a phone call was. Last time I used a pay phone, phone calls were like a quarter. This time it was like fifty or seventy five cents.
