How smart is it to open a door and cause probable 500lbs or so to crash into your door area, driver side area? You think that opening your door is going to preclude you from also getting injured..never mind the damage to your vehicle? This was my point. Maybe NC is different from CA? It's common practice here (lane splitting, especially at light queues, freeway backups).

CA is the only state to my knowledge where lane splitting is legal. So in NC it is much different. NC also has a helment law, not sure if CA does or not.

I guess the arguement will never be decided much like that of pro choice or Pro Life... But I will simply say that I personally will never do it, regardless if I am stuck in trafic or not. I feel that I am just another motorist, I just happen to be on two wheels. That and I rarely find myself on on the highway. I think I have about 8000 miles on a street bike to my credit and of those miles I might have 800-900 on the highway. There is nothing pleasurable about riding on the highway and I ride for pleasure.

For the record lane splitting in CA is not legal nor is it illegal. There is no law strictly prohibiting it, nor allowing it. In most other states there are rules prohbiting lanesplitting. There maybe a few other ranodm states that have no legislation about the matter. So lane splitting isn't really legal anywhere.

back to the topic the OP started. If someone went that far out of their way just to block me, i'd stop. Get off the bike and start yelling, or maybe just leave a nice broken mirror behind (never know he might hit my bike while i'm off it)

I heard of some Harley riders that carry a pocket size hammer chained to bike or keychain. When someone cuts them off or is obnoxiously threatening them with a fist. While passing the car, the hammer would simply be applied to the driver's side-view mirror. In effect shattering it and teaching the driver a lesson. Of course what i am describing is illegal. I am simply sharing what I have heard.

For those in NH as well as those who intend to pass through or visit NH, is is 100% illegal. Section 265:121 Driving Motorcycles on Roadways Laned for Traffic.

I don't do it because I feel it is too dangerous. Too many people here are willing to pop a door or pull in front of you without warning because they know you're breaking NH laws. I don't think I'd do it even if it were legal here.

I don't, but I was driving to work one day when I first started riding and someone decided they were going to merge into me. I honked, but I had nowhere to go (there was no breakdown lane, traffic in front and behind me). I punched the lady's window with my kevlar-knuckled gloves. She about poo'ed herself I think, even though I didn't break the window. Feel free to use that story.

Geesh, reading some of the posts almost makes me think that there exists more---maybe this is going to be too strong or weak of a term---"hostility" toward motorcyclists among some cagers in other states or areas? I mean, yeah, if lane splitting is illegal somewhere, okay. But, I'm getting the sense that some drivers, rather than shake their fist, hit their horn, yell expletives, etc., will take it upon themselves to cause a rider to wreck. I'm starting to think that personally, I would want to avoid lane splitting where it is illegal. I guess, CA is still harbors a "laid-back" culture when it comes to some things. Sure, there exists road rage in CA too, but I don't think that I sense a cager hostility towards riders lane splitting. I mean, it's not like we're impeding other motorists. In fact, I imagine we're actually increasing the efficiency of traffic flow. Take light queues for example, it's as if lane splitting is adding another lane. As a result, this allows a cager behind to move up one space who, otherwise, would be staring (hopefully not rear-ending) at the back end of a motorcycle. .

I would say that most of these stories are rare exambles.
I have had a few cars merge in on top of me but then realize whats going on and move over quickly. I think what happens alot and this is how my roommate was...is that when he was on his bike he felt he was the stuff and that when some did something he didnt like, he would let them know about it by reving the piss out of his bike. He calmed down after a bit once I explained to him that no one cares that your on a bike, your nothing special.

Although I will say that I had a run in with a bike when I was in my camaro. I was pulling out of Christo's, local food place, as a guy on a harely pulled in and then back out. (Christo's is also a bar in the back at both of their locations and apparently he was at the wrong bar) Well my car sits low and the dip coming out was rather large so I have to ease out and I was making a left onto south main at that.

Well I was getting a few open holes that I would have taken if it was just me in the car but I had my g/f and her sister in the car at the time so I wasnt about to do anything stupid. This guy starts getting pushy behind me and reving up. Finally I get hole thats comforatble and I ease on out. The guy on the bike is all over my butt so much that I can barely see his headlight if that over my rear deck. I brake check him.

He about looses it, bars start jerking and his expression was priceless. Well once he regains controll he comes over in the turning lane beside me and starts yelling at me. To which I can't hear due to his loud @$$ pipes that he just had to have on his harely. But once he meets a car in the turning lane in front of him he drops back behind me to once again come back beside of me after getting around the car to yell again and then pin the throttle and go wide open through the most blind intersection of Lexington.....As he took off I noticed the colors he was wearing and he was a member of the North Carolina Out Laws....oops. Oh well.
