What do you think the max voltage would be if the RR failed?

I am in the final stage of design of my brake light modulator, component selection. I tested on the bench and had the device fail at about 16v. It needs to be beefed up, but how far? Obviously if the RR fails I will have bigger problems, but I just want to build in a safety margin. Will likely go 24v but was wondering what the high side of the environment might be. Anyone have any experience with this?

More than approx 14.5 volts and you'll cook the battery.. 24 volts, best get the fire extinguisher...

It doesn't work at 12-14 volts??

Kinda sounds like your trying to re-invent the wheel Tom.. (un-less I'm missing something)..
 
Could you have a 15 v zener diode to earth? Like Scott said you shouldn't get more than 14.5 v and with the zener 15 v would pop the fuse protecting your circuit.

Re the max voltage, if at 2000 rpm the stator can put out enough voltage to charge the battery (> 14 v)
then at 12000 rpm without the RR it can put out > 80v
- all rough numbers

As you say if the RR failed you'd have bigger problems. It happened to a friend's Landcruiser and cooked all the wiring.

Something like that doesn't draw any current per say so you could make it anything you want. Spikes could be mid teens but functional to 16v should be fine.

If the bike has any incandescent bulbs left, they would burn if on too long so there is that...

PS I thought of an alternate use for the Switchback LED circuit. One could use a version of it to notify the rider if the turn signal is left on too long. Perhaps a HUD or simple reflector into the windscreen.

Thanks Scott. It works fine at 12-14v. It fails at about 16.5 and as this is on my brake light circuit I wanted the operational parameters robust. As for reinventing the wheel, this was just my opportunity to learn some basic electronics, circuit board design,, and c coding.
