What Backpack?

I have a Volkom backpack that was made for skiing/snowboarding. Very functional and well balanced, chest straps and waist straps, many pockets, good buckles. I am very happy with it.

I use a Targus for carrying my laptop back and forth to work, it is pretty comfortable, the laptop fts perfectly (thats what it is designed for), has a couple of external pouches for easy access and it has been through a couple of Florida downpours and kept the contents dry.

It also has reflective stripes which is always a good thing.

That's good to know. I'm just about to start using my Targus bag for commuting. I bought it this winter and love the bag, but I wasn't sure how it would fare on the bike.

Does anyone else wonder/worry about what the extra weight is going to do to your spine in the event of a get-off? That thought has always kept me from using one. Well that, and the fact that my Seca has a sissy bar and luggage rack I can easily strap stuff to.

Note, this isn't a criticism of those that use backpacks - I don't have any data to back up my fears. Thoughts?

Mine is only really going to hold work clothes and soft items most of the time, so I would think that it may actually add some protection to my back. I really don't think that extra weight is going to make a difference unless you're loading it up with sand or gold bars. lol

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet because I didn't read the whole thread, but I use a "Camel Back" that straps down very securely, has quite a bit of room for cargo, and hold a lot of water. I use it on and off road and love it. Price was about $75.

its cheap and straps to the bike, not me. Its super easy to use and it comes in red, which as everyone knows makes the bike handle better. :thumbup:

i know you got a backpack but thought you might liek to check this one out for day-trips.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet because I didn't read the whole thread, but I use a "Camel Back" that straps down very securely, has quite a bit of room for cargo, and hold a lot of water. I use it on and off road and love it. Price was about $75.

I've tried both of my CamelBak's.....the smaller M.U.L.E. in tasteful Desert Camo and my larger Striker in Mossy Oak. They both have very good attachment systems that are very secure. The hydration system is handy (but I still have to stop to use it) and the Striker can stow a lot of stuff. The smaller M.U.L.E. is the handiest for short trips, and would probably be the best for a day ride. I must be getting soft since leaving the army, though...2 litres of water is heavy.
It wouldn't be difficult to attach adhesive reflective tape to either if I was contemplating a night ride.

While gold bars would be nice, I was more thinking about my laptop, a change of clothes, and a pair of office shoes. My lappy is pretty hefty, especially if I'm packin' the power brick and other accessories. *shrug*

Luckily I don't have to take my computer with me, but if the need arises, there are some nice suggestions here to try. Actually I would probably get a different computer, I have a 17" dell right now. It is a heavy beast. Or I could get another 17" and strap one to my front and one to my back and have some killer body armour hahaha.

Yeah, I'm sportin' a 15.4" Dell Latitude D810. Spec. weight on it is 7#. I don't know if that's with or without the battery, but I'm sure it's without the brick. For now, I think I'll just be happy strapin' it to the sissy bar.
