If I still had a fairing I would prefer this setup

Hard Wired USB Panel Mounted Socket, with Fused Direct to Battery cable and Internal voltage regulator.
Requires a 20.8mm Diameter panel cut out, with 50mm rear clearance. Maximum panel thickness 4mm.

Rated IP67.

Cable length to USB socket approx' 3ft.

Suitable for any mobile device that utilise a USB 'A' connector.

Oh well, the versatility of a cigarette adapter style allows me more devices (and ones that use more than 5 volts). :rockon:

I'm now trying to find a waterproof Micro-B male USB end that will plug into my device. If you know of one, please share! I'll post back when I have it complete as I'm tracking a couple of ideas, but we'll have to see how they pan out...

Has anyone installed this? Did you hook it to switched power, or directly to the battery, and why? Where did you install it?

I installed the first one mentioned in this thread. Here's are a couple pics I took when I was replacing the front fairing. You can see where it's mounted (zip tied to the ignition lock cylinder). I have to hooked up to the battery tender plug. No fuse as of now, but it's still kinda temporary. I haven't decided if I'm going to use a relay so it only has power when the headlights are on, or if I'm going to leave it like this. I wouldn't leave anything plugged in when I'm not on the bike, so it may stay just like it is now (with the addition of a 3 or 5 amp fuse)

BTW, the reason for mounting it on the ign lock cylinder is because the GPS will mount to the handle bars. With the USB adapter also mounted to the handle bars (tripple tree) there is less to worry about as far as cords getting caught up in something when turning. The first time I had it mounted to the fairing stay, I like it like this much better. The GPS USB cord is very short (tied up), and the wiring for the USB power adapter runs under the gas tank with the rest of the headlight switch wiring.

If you just need some USB power for smartphones or whatever. I have this installed. I only use it when I need to charge my phone... otherwise It's in my pocket. It's super easy (2 secs) to attach or take off. Right onto the battery tender. These were at Daytona, but there are places to buy online.

I use one of these attached to my handlebars to power my GPS. One of these days I need to get round to adding a switched fuse block for my accessories.

The voltage is standard for USB (5 volts) and amperage is set at 1 amp.
I picked one of these up at www.americancrossroaders and it works great.

Here's what I did, I picked up a few things..

Marine Grade Locking Cigarette Lighter Plug 12 VDC
Attwood Marine 12-Volt Power Outlet
USB All Weather Power Outlet Charger

Connecting the USB o the 12-Volt Power Outlet wasn't to hard to do. I haven't installed it yet, but I feel good about it.

I picked up all these parts from Amazon.com. (my favorite shopping store)
