Scott: When I was working in that area (mid 90's), Lee county had a no pursuit policy. If we had a chase that went north of us, we had to take it ourselves up through Charlotte county at times. Not fun calling it via a cell phone due to loss of radio contact.

Back in the old days, persuit policy's were very lenient. The guy I chased, robbed(with a gun) a shop n go in a stolen car. I called it off after 20 minutes or so, in heavy rush hour traffic on US 41(he was still flying in heavy traffic). I saw him turn off ahead of me, so I went down that way, just checking.. Found the dumb ass at a corner, his car tettering on a culvert (with drive wheels in the air). Still in the car, waiting for me! Now that was fun!!!
As for your partner, I know their also your family, so its that much harder. Please acccept my condolences. Be safe and make sure you always go home alive after your daily tour.
