Wanting to get FZ6!

Hello, I am looking to convert from dirt bike to sport bike, so I am seriously considering purchasing an FZ6 soon. I was told that it is an excellent bike and easy to handle. But I want to make sure this bike is right for me... I have experience riding 2-stroke dirt bikes (250cc) but I have never really driven sport bikes or any bike on the road. Is the FZ6 going to be to much to handle for a first time street rider? As a beginner to the street... is this a good bike to start with?

I think you will find this is a well mannered bike when you want it to be and a great performer at top end should you feel so inclined to get to higher revs. It is a first time bike for me and I am finding it a perfect fit although my mileage has been limited to only 500 miles due to cold weather.

You have come to the right place for information. This forum will provide lots of support for all things FZ6. Ultimately you should sit on several bikes and do as many test rides as you can before you decide. Problem is, they stopped making the FZ6. It's getting harder and harder to find 2009 left overs.

Plenty of used, and the new FZ8 will be arriving soon.

Your transition from dirt to street, I myself included will be fine. Might want to take a safety class for the heck of it. Biggest difference was getting use to TRAFFIC! Kind of like racing motocross, you have to have a strategy to ride in the streets.

The hardest thing about making the transition from dirt to street is the weight of the bike. A 250 dirt bike is hundreds of pounds lighter than the FZ. Stopping a street bike requires a lot more brakes, and they are nowhere near as flickable. The FZ does not wheelie on command; you have to re-gear it make it 'light'. That's not a bad thing.

Nearly unlimited traction on the street compared to the dirt. No jumps, or big whoops to deal with...much wider lanes of travel. And a lot more crossing traffic.

The mechanics of riding, you'll be far ahead of the crowd, and I think an FZ is a great match for you. Strong enough to get you in trouble, but not quite quick enough to get you there before you think about it. As VR said, you have to have your head on a major swivel to keep track of all the stuff going on around you.... formal training will help there, in a big way.

Just don't think that you can lock the brakes up and slide the rear around on the street like you can in the dirt. You will end up high siding. Sounds like a no brainer I know but it was a mistake I once made.

i was into dirtbikes when i was younger, and now motorcyles as an adult. You're one step ahead of a newbie, but i cant empasize this enough as others will too. Take the MSF course! Believe me, you will get something out of it. The FZ6 is my first street bike. No regrets.

If you've been riding 250 2 stroke the FZ6 would be a good first street bike. You're used to a power band and the FZ is somewhat like that above 7k rpm so no big deal. Just remember street bikes are a bit top heavy compaired to dirt bikes.
As stated the real deal is riding in traffic, take the safety course and get good street riding gear. You know- helmet, jacket, gloves, pants and boots before you get the bike.

The transition will be in becoming smooth, and getting used to traffic.

I was in the same boat as you... dirtbikes to FZ-6 as a first street bike. As said previously, I'd highly recommend the motorcycle safely course. You aren't going to get any of the traffic/open road experience obviously but it will help with the transition to pavement. At the very least, at least in Maryland, if you pass you will get your license. I just took it slow at first because these are completely different beasts than a dirtbike. A lot more to look out for, a lot more to think about when you're on the road, etc. Also a lot heavier. If you are anything like me or others I know who ride dirtbikes, your instinct is going to tell you to throw your feet out around slow corners and such. The biggest hurdle I had was telling myself to keep my damn feet on the footpegs no matter what. Trust me though, you will pick that up quickly. If you go down on one of these and try to put a foot out you will probably never be the same . Let the frame sliders do the work! Oh yeah, and get frame siders right away . I don't think anyone here will tell you differently.

Trust me, you'll love it! I got mine new last September, after looking for "the perfect bike" for over two years! It's the perfect blend of handling, comfort, performance, styling, and price. My local dealer still has one new one left on his showroom floor! (If you can handle a 250 two-stroker you'll do fine on the Fazer) Good luck!

FZ6...was my first bike I rode in my life... and I dream about HIM...
