Hard call. If you are really attached to it fix it, or as you said this could be a great opportunity to get that "other" bike you've been lusting after. The Triumphs are very nice!

If I were in your shoes I'd first have to consider how much money I'd receive from the Ins Co. and look at the cost what the new bike and see if I wanted to take on another payment (I don't owe anything on the FZ). I know I would be looking long and hard at the 1125R.

Reiobhard mades a good point about buying back the totalled bike. The only problem then is that it's on a salvage title. That can scare away buyers when it comes time to sell the bike. So it's a tradeoff.

I vote to total it. My experience with restored vehicles is they are never quite the same again: loose bodywork, handling diminished. What they initially find & fix in the shop isn't everything that was damaged. And then I lose appreciation for the vehicle and don't want to invest anymore time or effort in it.

I would not buy back the bike as a salvage title unless you plan to never re-sell. Personally, I would never buy somebody else's salvage title bike, no matter how much documentation/photos come with it.

If I had the choice I'd total it, buy back the salvage bike and do the minimum to convert it to a track day bike. That way I wouldn''t have to worry about crashing my purdy bike while have a boatload of fun and improving my skills in the safest possible place.

Everyday i regret not saving my totaled 05'

Instead of saving it i went out and got a new 07', dont get me wrong i love the new bike (i say new but i have had it over a year now) i just wish i would have saved the old one. Not only do you get to keep your bike but you get the learning experiance of putting it back together.

I would have them total it. I had exactly the same experince with my FZ when I crashed but I saved all my receipts for all the mods I did to my bike and turned them in to my insurance which in turn, they raised the price from 5400.00 to 6575.00. Go for another one that has all the stuff you want on it, it would be better. less headache and stress. go for it and let them take it....:)

Also, I had LeoVince pipes on there that I paid 650.00 for. Talked to the insurance and they paid me for them what I had on the receipt and then took the pipes off and put on the old pipes and sold the Leo's on ebey. You could do that if you save all your old parts../..

tough decision. total it buy it back for a track bike while you and wavex mod the heck out of the new one you are thinking about the wrecked bike would probably never be the same. total it.

So here is the update from AAA:

The bike is considered a total. Here's the interesting part though. If they total it and I buy it back, they don't file any Salvage Title paperwork. They leave it up to me to file that stuff.:sinister: So I can get it back at a huge discount and money in hand to fix it myself, no salvage title, and I get to keep all my modded stuff. I think Wavex and I are going to do a naked conversion on it with the FZ1 headlight (I like it better than the FZ6 headlight).

Summary: I get to do what I want without the salvage title.:cheer:

On that note: My projectors and HID conversion will likely be up for sale pretty soon.

If I didn't buy the bike back, I asked and they said all aftermarket parts are still mine and I am welcome to go down to the salvage yard to take those parts back.

Total it, buy it back, buy another FZ to ride while you work on this one, sell "new" FZ when this one is finished, be happy.

if you'd get enough money to replace it, thats what I'd do. if it would leave you upside down or paid off but no cash for a down on a new horse then fix it.

I would total it and get a new one. As someone mentioned, a bike that crashed and was totalled is generally never the same. Do you really want to take that risk at 80mph or even worse, faster on the track? I was hoping my bike was totalled and it was. Got a new one and it rides like new. 8-)

The bike is paid off, so no way to be upside-down on it. I'm considering just getting something new. We'll see what they offer me.

I`d take the $$, buy it back for very cheap and make it a naked bombshell :D

I'm seriously considering this, but it all depends on how much money they offer me. If it's enough plus the value of the parts I'll sell, I may just go get a Triumph Street Triple instead.:sinister:

Look, I don't know how things work where you live....but in TN you can do this...: I would total the bike....buy it back from the insurance company at a fraction of the cost AND get a new fz. Try to salvage any custom parts and have a donor bike as well.

:hijack: your avatar kills me. every time I read one of your posts, I get the "Stewy" voice and a hint of sarcasm. :D:hijack:

I may not be the most experienced rider here, but I chose Total the bike. While fixing it up in to a killer streetfighter sounds very inticing, I think that the practical thing to do would be to invest your money in to a new bike that has not covered asphalt yet.
