Hey guys - I've been here for a while, but it's about time to make my first post. I'm a Houston rider, I got my '06 FZ6 about 6 weeks ago, and I've had a few old KZ's in the past.

Since I haven't got a little tool kit that came with the bike, I was going to put one together to carry around with me. I was wondering what came in the factory kit. Is there anything important you've added to yours? Anything you wish you had on the side of the road somewhere?

On long trips over 200km I carry chain lube as well.

The kit that comes with the bike has the correct sized wrenches to take the wheels off the bike, plus most metric sizes between 8 and 15 mm in combination (10 one end, 12 the other).... the spark plug removal tool and the shock adjuster tool are the ones that are more valuable, in my view.

It might be worth checking on eBay, or at the dealership to see what the OEM tool kit sells for..... They're one time use tools, but hopefully that's all you need them for.

Best tool you can carry is a credit card, and a cell phone.... other than that, the bike has never left me stranded.

+1 on that.

I say you'd be better off trying to get the complete OEM kit. It's one of the best bike tool kits I've seen from the factory. A couple tools are fairly specific to the bike and you may not be able to get them otherwise - not positive about that. In addition to that kit I carry tire plugs and the tire plug tools, a CO2 inflater and 4 CO2 cartridges, tire pressure gauge, small multi tool/knife, various bulbs, fuses and an extra spark plug or two.


(Credit cards and cell phones are worthless in the middle of nowhere, which just so happens to be the best place to ride)

I'm pretty sure the spark plug tool will fit the front axle.... at least that's how I trashed my spark plug tool, LOL.

That's an important thing to note. I haven't tried to use mine for front wheel removal, but it seems that everybody who has has broken that tool. And even if you have a garage full of tools that Yamaha spark plug tool is indespensable for changing plugs on this bike. INDESPENSABLE!!

So, deffinately carry a tool for removing the front wheel. Most standard spark plug sockets (SAE - 5/8" I believe) have a hex head on the other side that fits in that 19mm slot perfectly. Of course you have to carry a short 3/8 extension and a good socket wrench...


Also, make sure you have an allen wrench that fits the two bolts that hold the front of the tank in place. Not sure of the size. (It may come in the kit.. not sure...) Actually, that might be the same size as the binder bolt on the front fork. If so then it's deff in there. Anyway if your battery dies dies on the road and don't have leads connected to it you have to remove the tank to get to it.

Yeah, once I had sprung the hinge on the spark plug tool, I went looking for an allen wrench to fit the front axle..... none of my local hardware stores, or the chain outlets had the correct size. I stumbelled into using the spark plug wrench in reverse, as well.

That sucker is bulletproof.

You can make a tool to remove the front axle pretty easily using a bolt with a couple of nuts torqued together on it and then use a normal socket wrench to turn that.
