The better tire?

It's a little early to go tire shopping as I have at least this season worth of tread left on my PR2's

But I got an email today from compacc with some great deals on many pairs of tires.

These 2 caught my eye because of the very low price:

1) Sportmax Q2 ~$200

2) Conti Motion ~$164

Free shipping and of course no tax for out of state sales.

I know there are lots of other tires to choose from and each of you may have a favorite.

But of these 2 listed which one would be better.

oh and btw, I ride pretty moderately rarely seeing triple digit speeds, some twisites but not very many - mostly flat riding. I still have 1 1/8 chicken strips after 5000 miles on the PR2's

I vote neither. As you indicated, you don't need tires this year. Given your riding style, you may even get more miles out of the PR2s than you anticipate. I know good deals can be tempting, but buying unneeded supplies is rarely a smart decision. Especially perishable goods.

Why do you think the vendor is offering rock bottom prices on those tires? They're probably sitting on too much inventory and need to get rid of the older stock.

So not only would you be buying old tires, but you'd then be storing them for at least a year. By the time you use them, I don't think they'd even be worth the price you paid for them.

Other than the deal, are you interested in either of those tires? The Continentals are not dual compound, which given your riding, I would highly recommend. The Dunlops are dual compound, but they're sport bike tires. Maybe they're just blowing smoke about race technology and lean angles, but that's not really what you need anyway. You want sport touring tires.

I think you already have an excellent tire. And a set that has a lot of life left in them. If you've got a couple hundred bucks burning a hole in your pocket, I'm sure there are other things you could spend it on that you'd be able to get some use out of before next summer.

PS: There will be tire sales next year too.

I agree the PR2's handle everything i can throw at them and much more. Time will tell if I can squeeze 10k+ plus out of them.

I am likely to switch to a different tire just for the experience of it. it's really hard to judge a tire solely from what other people say. There's no better way to know what works well than to use them myself.

Good tip on not wanting a single compound tire. I may be inclined to try a sport bike tire just for giggles, why not? Besides I can mount them myself with the HF changer and mojolever.. give alot more leeway.
