sticky fuel cap lock

My lock on the gas tank is tough to open sometimes.. not afraid about snapping the key, but what kind of maintinance is required on it?? is it something as simple as wd-40 the lock core? thanks all :thumbup:

Yeah it wouldn't take anything special but something like "lockease" would work great for you I'm sure.

I've never lubed mine, but what I always do when I lock it/unlock it is compress the cap with one hand while turning the key with the other.
Motorcycle mechanic taught me that trick. He said he'd seen many keys snapped off in gas caps.
This takes all the pressure off the lock mechanism and makes it easier to turn the key.

WD-40 would be good initially but tends to gum up after a while. Use a specific lock lubricant in the key hole and work it in with the key. Silicone lubricant is also good.

i have some of that dupont teflon dry wax lub for the chain.. would that be better than wd-40 or does someone know of a specific product?

I use a little of my chain wax... spray a little into the lock, and work in using your key, after a while... it should start to loosen up

I do this whenever it feels a little sticky. I used WD40 before, but i find it doesn't last as long..

I stopped at a garage once and the cap wouldn't open. I tried removing the Allen screws round the top but that didn't help so I took an empty oil can and dripped a few drops into the slot. A few minutes later with some key manipulation it worked. This was about 2 years ago, no issues since.

i used some silicone lube in my ignition barrels, and it seemed to help quite a bit

I've had the same problem, but I have visible corrosion in/on the lock mechanism (I ride and park in the rain and slop all the time.) I was using lock de-icer for a while because I always have it in my riding jacket pocket. It lubed it just enough to allow me to unlock it, but I had to apply it every single time as it's a poor lubricant. WD-40 works very well for me now. One shot / month does the trick.
