i will start by sharing my story i was walking home today at about 5:50 i come up to a four way intersection were a yellow and black YZF-R6S turns in my direction i give him my nod of approval and he promptly pops it into a nice long wheelie for me about 1 1/2 ft off the ground for about 60 ft good stuff nice and clean. now if you've ever witnessed this kind of thing or done it please share your story :Sport:

save that stuff at a close parking lot and not on public roads. It does appear "cool", "hot" or whatever they call it now, but it's bad rep for the rest of us.

I think the word squid comes from Europe or UK? Meaning a someone who rides in a dangerous or uncontroled fashion.

Not sure I would be so quick to judge him as a squid. Sounds like he pulled a nice little wheelie with style. Now if he pulled the front 2 or 3 feet up in traffic or in front of a daycare with kids playing outside then he would be a squid in my book.

Wheelies are really hard on the front end of any bike and a good way to get into serious trouble. I used to pull a lot of them with my dirt bikes but after having to replace fork seals and a rim (cracks) I now just pull up the front up while dirt riding when necessary.

In general, a "SQUID" is any motorcyclist whose actions at the time are irresponsible.

I think you would find it hard to find too many people over the age of 25 who thinks pulling wheelies on public roads is cool?

There are well organised track days everywhere, where you can go as silly as you like, and there aint as much stuff to hit when you bin it, and there is normally expert medical assistants on hand to deal with you, if it all goes pear shaped.

Yes track days cost money, but not as much as a fine, when you get nabbed being a knob on the road.

One more reason to not do wheelies...it's not very user friendly for your suspension either!

Or, if you lose it, hit someone and you aren't carrying enough insurance to cover a loss of life or the general claim and you get sued. At that point you may be paying for the rest of your life............

I assume that irresponsible riders are called 'squids' because of the high number of young members of the millitary that ride around the bases exhibiting such behaviour. I grew up in a town with a base nearby and that's how they were referred to when I was a kid.

In regards to Naval personnel, yes. In regards to the motorcyclist, age is not a factor.

It all depends on how you look at it. I ride wheelies all the time. I actually have a second bike specifically for stunting. I wear a helemt and all the safety gear, plus i take whatever cautions i can. there is a right time and a wrong time to do wheelies. If the guy doing the wheelie was in the middle of traffic and he had sandals, shorts, a short-sleeved shirt, and possibly no helmet, then i would call him a squid. All the older crowd (usually 35+) see wheelies as reckless and irresposible. I know there are some older people out there that enjoy a good wheelie, but i dont think you will find them on this website. Thats why i usually keep to myself when the debate starts. I will give any pointers i can to the people who want it but i try to stay out of the arguments..........................................................................................................................here comes the horrible responses....

I know there are some older people out there that enjoy a good wheelie, but i dont think you will find them on this website. Thats why i usually keep to myself when the debate starts. I will give any pointers i can to the people who want it but i try to stay out of the arguments.:Sport:

I love a good wheelie and that is clearly part of why I like dirt. I also like air time but again, that's dirt. At 56 years of age I would say I fit in that term older but a wheelie on a public street where there may be pedestrians or even other vehicles is irresponsible at any time and the fact that a rider may have a bullet proof helmet, gloves, boots and ride suit is immaterial as it isn't them that any reasonable person would be worried about, it's the public that's of concern. If you don't believe this just ask that idiot in Tennessee that killed those folks with his burnout stunt at the parade fund raiser last year. Millions of dollars in insurance isn't going to help that guy and the law suits associated with the incident are huge. Is a lifetime of heartache and financial grief worth one mistake???

This sums it up for me! The street is the wrong place for stunts. While the risks may be low, the result of a stunt going bad can be huge.
