Serious helmet question...

While ridning to work this morning I was hammered by one doosey of a QLD storm , the type the comes up wrecks your life then fades away in under 30 mins ... So after being peppered by golf ball sized hail for 10-15 minutes im wondering what sort of impact might be sustained to a helmet do you think it would compare to an accident force impact & should I consider binning the lid ?? Keeping in mind the forces did crack my visor in 2 places , dislodged my windscreen & has left me sore & bruised

Also discovered that my waterproof jacket , pants & boots can only sustain x amount of water before remdering it useless , hell the rain was that heavy it was even pouring into my helmet throught the top vents & running down my neck the traffic continued along at around 10 kph & I was laying on the tank in order to see the instrument panel NEVER AGAIN in those conditions , that was actually scary :spank:

some brands may fair better than others, any chance you can get it inspected professionally (like Arai do)?

That does not sound like a relaxing ride into work...OUCH
anyway, I know that Arai will do a free (or relatively cheap) complete inspection that I believe includes x-raying the helmet to make sure it is all the way it should be. I think you may have to pay for shipping or something but I would think the piece of mind would be worth it. I'm not sure if other manufacturers have this type of program but there has got to be an independent outfit that would inspect it for you too. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I'm thinking your helmet should be able to withstand a little hail now and then. It's is made to protect your head so I assume you should be good no matter what brand helmet. Just my 2 cents worth. :rockon:

Glad you're okay Daniel! Good thing you had a helmet on. It takes a decent force to crack a face shield.
The force to break a shell will be different because it is backed by a liner and that changes its resistance to impact. If in doubt definitely go for a new one.

How old is the helmet, you should replce them every couple of years.

Personally i would go for a new one

If it causes you to wonder or stress about it - replace it. $300 bucks is pretty cheap for peace of mind.

Its an AGV Stealth so it isnt a cheapo helmet , not sure if they have testers in Oz though

Im not afraid of rain , I ride everyday rain , hail or shine have done for years & years & I actually do enjoy it...... Just that yesterday I was caught in an extremely fierce storm cell & i'll admit it had me a little rattled

Other than the cracked visor no , the helmet appears to of held up well as there is no visible cracking or indentations/divots that I can feel :thumbup:

Thanks mate :thumbup: Bike held up well , it worked the screen & mirrors loose so I just nipped them up when I got to work... Thankfully I had my tank bag on so there was little exposure (other than me ) to the hail..
