RPMs and Temp...

I have recently purchased my fz6 and am just getting used to the bike. I notice at higher gears I can barely hear the engine, (Due to the quiet stock exhaust?), Which causes me to have focus on rpms to know when shift up. Any suggestions at which rpms to shift the bike properly? Also suggestions for a decent exhaust without being extremely loud?
My last questions is about the running temp of the bike. I noticed a couple times that after riding for awhile the bike would be around 190 degrees and when i sat idling for a few moments the bike would shut off. Any ideas about this? The bike didn't shut off while i was riding, but when i stopped to put it in storage. Thanks for the help!!!

You need to choose the most comfortable RPM range for your daily riding.

Where you shift really depends on the type of riding you are doing. Shifting at lower rpm's (4k-6k) will make for a smooth ride and spend a lot less gas with still enough power to get you going when you twist the throttle.

Shifting at higher rpm's will make more power available on demand and you can speed up quickly, but your engine spends a lot more gas. This style of riding can be useful getting on a freeway or trying to pass someone quickly or lose that guy in the honda civic that's trying to race you.

You can ignore the rpm needle completely and choose your gear by how much power you want in your right hand. If you are in 6th gear going 35mph, you probably shifted too much and dont have much power to accelerate in case you need it. If you are cruising down the freeway at 60mph in first gear, you haven't shifted enough. Try to find that sweet spot that makes you comfortable and confident on your motorcycle.

For your question about the temps, my bike also runs about 180-190 usually. That sounds normal. Your bike might be shutting off because your idle is not adjusted properly. Check the rpm that your bike idles in neutral. It should be around 1200-1350. If you need to adjust it, refer to the users manual. Manual should answer most of your beginner questions.

BTW, how old is the bike? are you past the break in period?

I shift at all different RPMs, but when just commuting and taking it easy, I'll probably shift between 4-5k rpms. I've found that 60mph in top gear is 5k RPMs (according to the speedo, of course) so I try to end up there on a 55 mph road. If I'm getting on the highway... I like to get on it so I end up shifting at like 13-13.5k and can usually get up to speed in 2nd gear. So I just shift the rest of the way up.

you normaly need to lower the revs by about 10-20% (you can work it out exactly from the gear ratios) in order to have a smooth upshift

doing it clutchless is quite smooth, otherwise you just need to get a feel for the bike. I find changing gear quickly to be the smoothest.

get the Leo vince lv one exhaust , i run them without db killers and its pretty quiet on the highway , nice and deep sound in the city but not obnoxious
check your idle it should be around 1300 RPM

Thanks for the input everyone, I really appreciate the help. Already liking this bike and it was deff. the right choice for me. Ill be using that manual as well, thanks. First thing is to check the idle and adjust it, thanks alot.
