Repair or replace?

I just saw this in my rear Pilot Power (about 4k miles on it).

It was flush and I pulled it out and put it partially back when the hissing started.

Plug it or replace it ?

Thats a big hole, I'd try a plug but only to get to a tyre shop. at least you have about half the life out of the tyre. I know that's not much consolation.

My caliper says it is an 8mm screw. I can put the tire in the trunk if needed. I have never plugged or patched a bike tire so I don't know the safety / risk of doing so.

Has anyone repaired a screw hole this large?

Because most of our tires are poly based cords and you know several of those cords throughout the carcase were likely cut, I'd be in for a replacement.

I've never seen a bike tire separate but it would always bother me knowing the carcase was compromised. A car tire would get a patch and live on I suspect but many have steel belts vs poly cords....

Most will say replace but having seen what our local highway patrol officers ride like & knowing that all their tyres get plugged if needed them I'm going to say its safe to plug :thumbup:

I have never had to make the decision myself but I would probably let the tyre wear rule my thoughts , tyre with plenty of meat left I would plug , tyre nearly due for replacement , bin it

Thanks all. Spoke to a few shops and no one will take my money to plug it. They say it is a liability and I see their point. Ordered a new pilot power from Revzilla and will have it mounted on Friday.

I'd say it was a good choice to replace, it's a lot bigger than a screw hole.
I've had 3 plugs in one tyre at once, but wouldn't plug that!

I would just patch not plug done it plenty. Suprised none of the shops would do it. Probably just wanted you to buy a tire. I bet if you told them you were gonna order online they would.
