regearing? how?

Re: Rear Sprocket (-1): Vortex

so i will start with a -1 front sprocket. if i like it and want more then i get the +2 rear and new chain which will take me even further down the road of having more power down low?

i think i should be buying a new chain anyway pretty soon though as this one has well over 30k on it. i might just do it all at once. if youre going to go bananas might as well do it properly then :)

Re: Rear Sprocket (-1): Vortex

Stop the madness and start with -1 front sprocket... see how it goes with that and if you think you need more than invest in a +2 rear + chain.

With what I know of you from this board, I reaaaally don't think you want to go the opposite direction (less power down low for more fuel economy).

Aw, C'mon David, what's mad about -2 on the front, and +1 on the rear??? :D:D:D

It's great for front tyre life!

Right... -1 front = +2 rear, so if you start with -1 and you want more "down low power", then you can add another +2 in the rear. I had -1 in the front and loved it even though it got a bit buzzy at highway speeds... which is why I never got as far as adding +2 rear because it would have made the bike even more buzzy (if my memory serves me right we're talking about holding 8-9k rpms at cruising freeway speeds... which was not acceptable to me).

lol yeah... as mentioned above, I never went that far as I thought -1 front was the limit of bearable at freeway speeds, but then again that was my own experience... Lone may need -1/+10 lol
I really can't imagine -2/+1, which btw is not standard... most ppl would tell you to avoid "too small" of a front sprocket due to the bend in the chain becoming too "tight" and thus decreasing life. More typical is -1 in the front and/or +2, +3...etc in the rear.

-2, +1 is definitely not standard!

As for -2 killing the chain and sprockets...yep, this is right, only got 25000km's out of my last chain & sprockets....but also too, a 520 set up is lighter, and not as durable as a 530 set up either...

Re: Rear Sprocket (-1): Vortex

Will I need to fiddle with anything or just change those 3 components and it's sorted?

Don't forget the speedohealer. Changing the gearing will throw off your speedo considerably. A speedohealer will get the you sorted.
So a quick search and you'll find what you need.
As stated before, really don't thing higher gearing is what you're looking for.

Oh, and Nimzo, the reason we're changing tooth size is that we're looking to change the diameter of the sprocket, not the actual tooth count. The tooth count changes as a product of the diameter change.

Re: Rear Sprocket (-1): Vortex

So if I saw off all the teeth on both my sprockets, I should be able to go laser fast?????

LOL @ sawing teeth off!! great visual there. like a redneck sprocket missing teeth.

I've been thinking about doing the -1 in the front also because it would be a lot easier on the wallet than the whole setup, but I got the bike with 19k miles on it and i really dont know when would be the optimal mileage to get a new chain/sprockets anyway. guess it depends on how hard you kill it regularly, so if you ride it like you stole it, they probably won't last as long as they should.

Question though about the chain:

From what I've read, you can go with the factory chain if you only change the front -1 and anything else you need a new chain. So when you buy a new chain (which is what I'll probably end up doing - the whole setup just to be safe), how many more links do you need? Does it come already completely linked (i.e. in a circle not just a strand), or do you have to get it cut and do whatever to the master link(I have no idea!)?

I just did the -1 mod. Best £15 and 30 minutes I have spent so far. As I posted somewhere else, it's not a massive change - I didn't really notice the difference too much at first - but once you have had a chance to ride with it for a while you'll love it. I now understand why so many people have said, "It should have come from the factory that way."

How much easier to wheelie is it with a -1 front? Based on Wavex's input about highway buzz I dont think I'll do the +2 rear because I spend so much time on highways.

I haven't noticed it wanting to lift any easier, but then again I've never done a wheelie and probably won't ever do one (on purpose). That being said, I have had the front wheel lift an inch or two under heavy accelleration - that was before the -1 so I don't know how it would react now. I've got on it pretty hard and it seems to behave about the same, but logic says that it should be easier.

so -1 on front and +1 on rear should make it more willing to wheelie then?

how much it would "buzz" at highway speeds on that setup? I'd prefer to do all this in one go rather than do it bit by bit.

I am on the fence about whether to gear up or down actually, but will decide as it gets closer (saving up some money to do a bunch of mods on bike all at once).

This makes about as much sense as most of your posts! You ask how to tame the FZ down and are on the fence about whether to take it the opposite direction. As always I'll leave a post of yours with my eyes rolled back!

Yeah, sometimes I post without really thinking about the issue in great detail. Sometimes it's just me thinking out loud. Also, I have been accused of having A.D.D. more than once, so I guess it can shine through in my posts at times.

I do apologize for any annoyance it causes, which I'm sure it must from time to time.

But with respect to the gearing issue here, after a good deal of thought based on the feedback here I have in fact decided to make the bike quicker in lower gears by gearing her down. Now, I am thinking aloud about just how far to go.

:)

Not an annoyance, just off the wall **** man! You ask how to gear it to be docile, and then decide to go even faster. It's all good.

My point exactly!

Now I'm confused

isnt that gearing setup right? huh?

lol yeah....I thought about it because I have been looking at a used 2003 1150GSA from bmw thats priced at about 6k at a dealership here. I test rode one last summer and loved the lazy pace and knowledge i could go anywhere on it.

So instead of buying it i thought maybe I could make the FZ into a laze paced tourer for much less money and just sacrifice the off road stuff. But then I thought some more about it and figured it would still be an evil FZ6 just slightly sedated and would just sound angry with me for sedating it.

:BLAA:So THEN I said freck it lets go bananas!!:BLAA:

Tell me about it!!!

Do you know how many times I have "decided" to buy another bike?? Seriously, I've laid out for myself exactly how I can pay for it and think to myself, "YES! Monday I go set it up!"

Then before that day comes I end up talking sense into myself and don't buy the bike I "decided on". So far, I have "purchased" a Ducati 848, one year old BMW R1200GS, 2003 BMW 1150GSA, BMW K1300S, V-Strom kitted out for dirt, a Royal Enfield Bullet, and a Triumph Bonneville. And I do mean quite seriously that in my mind I have "decided" to set up buying those machines. That's been over the past year though. Oh and a triumph sprint ST.

THEN there's all the ones I just THINK about buying. Seriously, I have a problem.

I need help. HELP BUYING MORE BIKES!!!! :BLAA:

That really speaks volumes about the Fazer though. I myself have "decided" to buy three other bikes. But when the time came to pulling the trigger, and I took another ride on the Fazer, I always turn back.
Plain and simple, you need another bike. Keep the Fazer and get another ride. Makes sense to me.
