My take on the subject is that if you don't have a way of getting audio from the radar detector inside your helmet, you shouldn't bother. Because there's no way you're going to be able to watch the detector's screen all the time.
But if you do have audio in the helmet, it's the dog's bollocks.
Another BC Canada member (kamloops) has one of these nifty helmet setup for radar detectors from a company called Legal Speeding called the H.A.R.D. System (Helmet Assisted Radar Detection System). It's probably the most usefull radar detector add-on I've seen on the market.
I'm considering this as my next mod. Highway Patrol here in California have a constant use, forward facing setup that allows them to take speed readings on the fly. You may be 1 mile ahead of them, and before you recognize that they are approaching you, they have already taken a speed reading and are preparing to flip around and nail you. It's not a problem if you are in a pack of vehicles, but riding as a "Lone Wolf" is a vulnerable target!
I was lucky to talk my way out of a ticket 2 days ago, but it was still an inconvenience. Thanks for the information.
Thanks Fred. Nice setup Boneman. They have some good acessories there at legal speeding . com. I have an escort for my truck but would love to mount it on the FZ.
I have a passport on the bike and in my truck, I use my molded earphones plugged in to the detector and my Ipod so it works really well, by the way I have a virtually new X50 for sale in the forum "For Sale" section..
Here is how I mount mine. Have it hardwired as well. I use mounts from RAM. Its held on by a Magnet. Easy to take on/off.
I use the H.A.R.D from legal speeding. Have to have something like that. Earphones or a Screamer. You will not see your detector go off or hear it with out.
I don't really speed anymore. Had an experience in New Mexico in my M3 doing 140+ and beating out a state trooper... (young and dumb).
As someone earlier stated, don't be too confident in these things. With all the various methods cops use nowadays all this gadget sometimes does is let you know you are getting pulled over. Instant on when lone wolfing will get you most the time. Even old fashioned out in the middle of nowhere a cop with a stop watch and binoculars (out west, middle plains states) will never set off a detector.
Play it smart I say and get your speed fix at a track (or go to Montana)
dude if I got nailed by a guy with binoculars and a stopwatch I'd have to give him props...I dont think i'd even be mad about the ticket lol....I mean if a guy has a set of these....how you gonna compete??
