Is it true that y'all's police are telling people to not go into downtown, because its not safe? I saw this http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2012/10...says-war-like-detroit-is-unsafe-for-visitors/
And it got me wondering just how true that is. If it is true and police are just up and walking out of the city quitting then what happens when there are no more cops? It's sad to think that what once was the epicenter of American industry has gotten that bad....

I live in kalamazoo, MI and have been to detroit tons of times. I wouldnt say that Im afraid to go into the city but there are parts you want to stay away from, like any large city. I would be afrid to just drive through but i definitely would go there on my FZ! Its true its one of the most dangerous cities in America but people arent going to attack you for no reason.

Me and my dad just went on a trip up to Michigan and went through Detroit, we went to touristy downtown(GM Headquarters and all that) and it seemed pretty nice, but obviously that is going to be better then some. I really wanted to go down 8mile just to see what is was like but my dad said a big NO to that one. One thing i did notice though is freeway traffic there is frickin nuts. We did 90mph just to not get run over, they just go so fast there. Had a 350z pass us doing easily over 100mph. No one gives 2 ****s its seems, also the freeway seemed to have lots of piles of trash on the side.

Seems maybe its just a publicity stunt on the police unions part to get more officers or money maybe.

What people from Detroit must be thinking when they read that:

I don't live in Detroit, but I do visit the downtown area at least once per year for a Red Wings game.

Of all the places in Detroit, the downtown area is probably the safest. With all the casinos, Joe Louis Arena, Cobo Hall, Ford Field and Comerica Park, those buildings draw a huge influx of visitors to Detroit. Plan on seeing extra police in those areas, especially on game/ event nights.

I wouldn't feel the least bit worried about visiting downtown Detroit... the rest of the city, not so much.
