Ruby had $40.00. Her dad gave her another $30.00 and her mum gave her $10.00 to buy a new DVD. The DVD Ruby wants costs $54.99. If Ruby buys the DVD, write an equation using a variable to describe the amount of money that Ruby will have to contribute to have enough money for the DVD.

Few different ways, but this is one:

Let x = Ruby's contribution

$30.00 + $10.00 = $40.00

$40.00 + x = $54.99

x = $14.99
