Pushing is hard...

One of my most dangerous motorcycling experiences ever involved running out of gas on an interstate! This was on my first bike (Buell Blast) that had no gas gauge (:ban:) so you never really knew where you were on gas. It started spluttering. Luckily, I was in the second to right lane already, there was no one to the right of me, so I could get into the breakdown lane before I stopped. I still have nightmares thinking of running out of gas in a middle lane of an interstate and not being able to move off the road.

Later, I practiced switching to the reserve tank while on the go, and it was possible to do it while riding, but not without practicing it first.

I ran out of gas the very night I bought my used 1980 Suzuki GS750. As I'm getting ready to ride the bike home from the seller's house, I realize that the bike is really low on gas and I ask the seller for $1 back so I can get gas. He wouldn't even consider it - he almost seemed insulted. About 2 miles from home I sputter to the side of the road. Keep in mind this was 1988. No cell phones, no debit card transactions at the gas station, no credit cards. Jogged home (no gear, not even a helmet law in '88), begged the room mates for a couple bucks and a ride back. Man was I nervous leaving my "new" bike behind like that.
