There must have been a few different problems happening in this thread, or the clutch switch was just coincidence, like Townsend mentioned.
Any problem with the clutch switch/sidestand interlock will prevent the starter from even cranking the engine. So if the engine cranked, but did not start, it can not be due to the clutch switch.
