Please Help Fuel problem??

Hi everyone.

I'm Kyle i have a 2004 FZ6.

When i come up to lights or stop sign my bike idles really low then cuts out.
I restart the bike and the idle is at about 500 RPM. I switch the bike off and restart after a couple of mins its fine.

I took the fuel pump and filter/Gauze thing off and cleaned it, I took the fuel line off and made sure it was not blocked. re connected everything and it ran the best i have ever had running.

Two days later it all happened again i then did the same however now it will not restart at all, also i Cannot jump start the bike?

Please help.

Your idle speed is way low, it should be 1,250-1,350 rpm.

+1. Call your local Yamaha dealer with your VIN and they'll tell you if it's been changed. If not, they'll do it for nothing as it was a manufacturers recall.

You can also see problems with the Throttle Position Sensor by getting your readout in the diagnostic mode and actually read the TPS.

Make sure you don't have any kinked lines under your tank. Fuel problems can be anything from bad fuel/water in fuel to fuel pump failure just make sure you check the cheap easy stuff first. Some Sea Foam injector cleaner won't hurt either.

Thanks everone,

I went to the Yamaha dealer yesterday and he showed me the website and my Number did not come up which got me worried, however i will ring yamaha direct. i will get the TPS looked at.

Any ideas on how to get it going now tho? It starts, sound rubbish and cuts out after 4-6 seconds? the fuel pump sounds like its struggling so should i replace this part first or is there any other things i can try? crack the first injector off maybe?

+1 on bumping up the idle and the TPS as well.

If you have a volt meter, check the voltage accross the battery terminals while sitting. It should be 12.8 plus volts FULLY CHARGED. If in doubt fully charge it and get it LOAD tested at an automotive shop. If the bike ran, watching the votage while cranking it would also give an idea of the condition of the battery. When my dash lights started to flicker when cranking, the battery still started the bike but the voltage dropped to 8 volts and still started/ran...The battery got replaced, I don't care to push start it..

You should also have a full 12 volts GOING TO THE FUEL PUMP when initially turning on the key, approx 2-3 seconds (kill switch set to RUN). There's two harnesses to the pump, one's for the fuel gauge, the other for the pump.

Also, did you jump the battery with a car battery with the car running? If so you may have burned out something, when jumping, you can use a car battery, just NOT RUNNING.

If your not getting enough voltage thru the system, the fuel pump may not pump fully, ignition work, etc.

Why your at the battery, check the connections of the cables, that their clean and tight...

So i got it tested and it read 12.2v , the garage are now charging it.

So i collect my battery today it is now charged and putting out 12.7v.

I took the Fuel pump back out (3rd Time) then made sure that all connections fro the pump to the filter ect ect were in place tight and correct.

As the fuel was low i put 5 Liters in. put the bike together and she fired up ran really bad and cut out 2-3 time as it got rid of the air in the system now she runs great.

Not sure weather it was the battery not giving enough to the pump.
or the fuel was to low for the pump ( as it was empty after i drained it)
Or was the pump not connected correctly who knows, its works now.

Just need the sun to come back.

If you can, have the shop or invest in a voltmeter and check the current across the battery terminals and MAKE SURE your charging system is indeed charging. It should, when idleing be putting out over 13 volts, at 5K RPM around 14 volts.

If it isn't, your battery will be dead again, the bike acting up and you'll be back again wondering

Hopefully one of your adjustments to the bike solved your problem..

If the bike has the dual headlight mod, be aware that there is slight draw at idle.
