The other day I took off both of my front brake calipers and dismantled them in two pieces .. inside the brake caliper just underneath the brake pads there was a BRAKE PAD RETAINER CLIP I believe is the name of it... I am sure I had taken one off but I can't find the other one.. unless there was none? Question is ... is it possible to buy these alone anywhere in Europe? Im in UK.. if I buy new brake pads will they come with this clips? is it a big problem to fit one and leave the other without? I appreciate any opinion and information . Thanks!

I have an S1 and have replaced the front pads a few times and that picture is NOT the clips from the front. It looks to me like the clip from the rear caliper so there is only 1. Did you take the rear brake apart as well. See number 8 in the drawing.

That's really odd, we have the same, (maybe the year bike is different but shouldn't make a difference),
and both web sites show a different part #. ??? Never mind, that's the REAR caliper..

Wishmaker, the pic of the spring(first pic), is THAT ONE YOURS, or taken off the net somewhere?

The Op's picture is definitely NOT an S2 ft spring

In any case, it is available.

I found the first pic on google believing that is the closest as I remember It looks, but Im sure its an anti rattle spring ... I attached a pic from google again but im sure this is it .. I have one that is inside the caliper but in the other caliper I either didnt had it or it has been misplaced.. been looked everywhere but can't see a trace of it .. Ps: I own an Yamaha Fz6 2006 year. I can see this part available on ebay and few other websites in US but it seems in the UK there s nothing haha.. weird!

And it get's more WEIRD. In trying to help, I think I discovered a problem on my bike! I don't have the springs shown in the parts list....never have! And they are not shown in the FSM! Geesh! Now I have to take out the fine tooth comb and see what other surprises the PO had for me. Thanks all!

I just tried to bleed and fit back the calipers and the one that has that anti rattle was perfect from 1st.. the other one without the that anti rattle seems to be moving about in there.. i think it must have a role and its a must ..or im not doing something right myself.. :(

That spring does just that, keep slight tension on the pads so they don't rattle.

It shouldn't make a difference in bleeding the brakes... You can swap the spring to the other side and try bleeding that side, see if it makes a difference..

BTW, why do you have , in the post above ,^^^^, the pads aligned like that?

Wishmaker, I believe you have the spring in correctly, parts like this usually ONLY go in one way.. And
in the parts fish show it as you have it...

And Tom, I looked in my FSM (S1), and its not in the brake section either, agreed weird..

Now the S2 has the anti-rattle spring on top with one pin holding the spring and both pads. That has the arrow atop it pointing forward...

For a 2006 model (fronts):

I was just trying to show how they sit on that rattle thing.. bleeding them works fine but the last one doesnt seem to sit right like it needs more tension on it.. I will try all again for that caliper tomorrow .. bad weather here.. if no luck I will try look for that rattle spring to buy it ..thanks again Townsends FJR for the help naming the missing part :p

The S2 bikes are more notorious for ft brakes dragging.

When you can, you may to at least pump those pistons out a bit (caliper off, pads out).

Then use brake cleaner and a tooth brush to make sure its as clean as possible. If ones real heard going back in, I'd be replacing the seals in the calipers.
Yamaha recommends caliper seal replacement EVERY TWO YEARS. In real life, IME, closer to 5-6 years.

Also, each caliper FLOATS on those pins. The black rubber boots (internally) and pins should be cleaned every once in awhile and re-greased with BRAKE SPECIFIC grease.

If their NOT floating or centering themselves, it'll be difficult to get a proper bleed, etc.

As Jack Nicholson said in 'A Few Good Men'...'Well, don't I feel like the farging icehole!'. I DO have the front caliper springs......I just never noticed. I am going to shut up until I get smarter :). Sorry for any confusion
