Oil Filter problems

Just used a hammer and screwdriver to remove my oil filter. Bike has done 13,000 km and I figure this was the filter put in by the dealer. Not impressed that it was put in so tight I needed to destroy it to loosen it enough to use the filter tool to eventually remove it.
The less my bike goes to the yamaha dealer, the better.

I've had 2 or 3 filters get stuck so hard to the motor that I needed to use a different tool than a cap wrench to remove them.... all mounted by me; the bike has never had a change at a dealership. I am particular about oiling the gasket prior to installation, and I only ever tighten the filter ~ 2/3 of a rotation from contact.... whatever the force is I can put on it by hand.

Even then, sometimes I need to resort to a pair of slip jaw pliers. Less mess than puncturing the filter with a screwdriver, and I am more sure of the torque I can apply to unseat the filter I will be discarding.

This is very normal on the FZ6. I've yet to have one that i didnt need vise grips to take off. Even if i put it on my self. Seems like in time they just stick good.

I must be on of the few that have never had a problem with a filter. The first filter came right off and everyone since then has as well. I've used the correct size filter wrench that I picked up for a couple bucks.

These are the best! Have used them since my first change and can't figure out why all filter companys don't use the nut.

And the nut head has a hole through it for easy safety wiring! I've used them for years on race bikes. I just ordered one for the FZ (2007). I order the KN-204. I hope that's right!

It's so easy to tighten the oil filter too much when first putting it on. When putting on a new filter, it should be twisted on until there is resistance, then tightened just a little bit more. The heat from the oil makes the filter expand and seal tighter. You should be able to take the filter off by hand when changing it. But that's easier said than done, especially when you feel like you can tighten the filter another full turn when first putting it on.

I like those filters with a bolt head--what a good idea!

I have the 148 on my FZ and just did the same research you just did and yes, it does call for a 204. I just changed my post to reflect that.

While doing the that research I brought both filter demensions up. The 148 is slightly longer and approx .0100" wider. I can tell you it does work but will replace it with a 204 at the next oil change....
