reminder to everyone, even if you think there is no way your brake pads have worn down....CHECK THEM ANYWAY!!!

Over 30 days my front brakes went from brand new to NOTHING. I only found this out because I had to change my front tire and the guy working on it mentioned to me:

"hey, you have no front brakes eh?"

They were worn to NOTHING. pics coming up 2morrow when I change them. For now the bike is sidelined.

What?????

How many miles?? What kind of pads?

I took off the stocks way early and had lots left, swapped over to galfer pads and wore them down about halfway, then put on another set. I dont let them wear out, but you should get 10-15k out of set easy.

Probably in the range of 5-7k or so. There was a track day in the middle as well. Also, I have been experimenting with heavy braking this month. But even then, I have experimented with pretty heavy braking in the past too.

I was shocked to learn the pads were 100% worn.

I just put on new tires and looked at the pads when I changed. I have 9k miles on stock pads and there is around 1/8 to 3/16 of pad left on each.

How thick are the stock pads to being with??

something is wrong dude
even heavy braking and 1 track day will not kill your pads that fast

have done over 15000 of your miles and 2 trackdays on 1 set of pads and only 3/4 worn
id be guessing that you have some dirt in the piston seals not allowing them to fully retract essentially they are "on" ever so slightly

I recently changed my pads. Even after 16500 miles and a few laps of the Isle of Man TT circuit the original pads were only 50% worn. The replacement carbon ceramic brembo's are awesomely good. Loads of feel and a bite like a shark!

I'd make sure the calibers are not dragging too much. A little drag is normal however your tire should spin some after spinning by hand (ft end lifted-brakes off). Mine rotates approx 1/2-3/4 a full rotation after a hand spin and release. If it stops immediatly you have a problem....

Note:

My FJR was dragging and wouldn't spin an inch after releasing the front brake. I could feel them dragging just moving around the garage. A ckeaning of the calibers (weren't bad at all) and new seals (with brake specific grease)took care of the problem.

MY FZ (07) was dragging some too(not as bad). Took the calibers apart (again not too bad) and re-assembled using brake s specific grease (designed for pistons, slide pins/etc.),, NO new seals. It made the drag considerably less and back to normal...
