Looking to buy an FZ6N for my next bike. Been riding about a year on an old yamaha FZX250 (Zeal), great bike to learn on, competes very well in the twisties and puts bigger bikes to shame! However, it's getting a bit long in the tooth and I'm off restrictions this month so looking for something similar, bigger and newer.

I like the inline 4s, like nakeds and like Yamaha so the FZ6N is the way to go! Looking for a post 2006ish sort of model, secondhand of course.

I notice on bikesales.com.au recently a bunch of FZ6Ns are coming up as listed with the LAMS icon next to them... what's this about? I thought the FZ6Ns were all non-LAMs? I don't want to buy a LAMS version for my next bike.

Not sure about LAMS approved as we don't have this in Western Australia.

It's a strict 250 licence (not RGV250 though ;)) for 12 months then you can go for your full licence after that.

They are talking about LAMS in WA but they've been talking about it for years...

BTW :welcome: to the forum!

I thought the XJ6N was the FZ6N in LAMS clothing? I was under the impression that FZ6N was stopped as it wasn't LAMSable? Wonder if that's false advertising on bikesales

I picked up a new FZ6N end of last year, loving it. There's fewer and fewer around but they sure have some good deals on them.

Welcome to the forum!

Power delivery is quite different. There is also @ 18hp difference between the 2 bikes.

Again, not sure where these fit into Lams as it's not in WA

I'm clearly not the most knowledgeable in LAMs either, I got my license before they brought it in up here

From what discussion I did have with dealers/people I thought that it was a power to weight ratio thing or something similar and there are big lists of bikes of what is/isn't ok. Some over 600cc some well below.

Anyway I thought the FZ6 is a detuned R6 and the XJ6 is a detuned FZ6 - the XJ being introduced to fit in with the LAMS license changes and the FZ8 to replace the FZ6 as a non LAMSable bike and gateway drug on your way to an FZ1

The loss of the under-seat exhausts lost me the sale however... not to mention the seemingly pitiful performance when compared to the 6!?

Not sure how different it is in vic to qld to boot... this list should prove helpful:

Approved motorcycles for novice riders : VicRoads

XJ6's seem LAMSable... FZ's do not appear to be on the list... unless they're advertised in a different state or ... ?????

Either way, take one for a test ride - who cares what's written on paper if it puts a smile on your dial and you're on your opens anyway

Happy hunting!

Thanks for all the responses guys and will keep you filled in when I buy one! The VicToads site definitely does not list the FZ6N as LAMS compliant, so must be a bikesales/bikepoint stuff-up, unless the seller can flag it as LAMS (which I don't think is the case).

I'll definitely go with the true FZ6N rather than an XJ, had noticed the power difference.

Hey guys, have to report back... I've let you all down and bought an FZ8N... but hey, I still love the FZ6ers too! Ride on brothers...
