Just picked up this 2005 FZ6. Cost me $3,000, but only had 850 miles. The bike looks like it came straight off the showroom floor, very very nice. Perfect paint, perfect mechanically, I haven't found any issues yet :) In fact, just driving it home I put on about 10% of the miles that the bike ever had!

I checked the tires, oil, chain, and everything I could think of and it all still looks great. I'm still thinking I should take it to a mechanic to give it the once over and make sure everything is as good as it appears to be. Any suggestions on this? What should I look for, and what should I have them go over? What does an oil change/filter cost on this bike, and should I go for it even though the oil on the dipstick even looks brand new?

I plan on putting tens of thousands of miles on this bike over the next few years, so I want to make sure I start off as best as possible.
 
looks like a bargain!

5 year old tyres will be past their prime. It will be worth checking for cracking in the treads.

The brake fluid may well have sucked in some moisture over 5 years and changing it will be beneficial.

Change the oil and filter, lube the chain.

Unless it only just had the 600 mile service.

those tires are looking a little old.. otherwise i would probably change the oil just for good measure. definitly changed the brake fluid.. when the gas is low in the tank, tilt it up and check the air filter..

someone correct me if im wrong, but didnt all 05's come with silver frame and engine??? that kinda looks more like an 06 with 05 forks.. can anyone else verify that???

Yeah, I keep thinking that's an 06 because of the paint....Hmmm.

Hmm, well about the 05 or 06 thing, that brings up a good point. He listed it as an 05, and pointed out the VIN sticker says "11/05", but I suppose that date of manufacture they were already cranking out '06's. The title does say 2006, and when I did temp. registration it pulled up as an 06 as well.

I figured the title might be like my old honda, where a 1969 model could be listed as a 1973 if it sat on the floor for too long :) those bikes were titled under what year they were sold.

Anyways, anything else I could look for to be absolutely sure what year this is? I'm leaning towards 2006 now, but the only differences I see other than the black paint is sequential injection and a cat converter. Is the cat in all markets, and where would it be located?
 
One other thing, also. I noticed the front right low beam is out (high works fine), but when I took the bulb out it's just fine. I tested it out and no issues at all, lights up perfectly. This means bad wiring in the bike somewhere I suppose, is it on a fuse block on its own or something I hope? Where can I start to diagnose that issue.
 
Low beam is one lamp on only.

There are 3 Cats. One in each header join and one in the bean can in the vertical pipe under the seat.
 
Well this is slightly concerning. I took both headlamps out (was going to switch them) and when I went to put the working one in the non working side it went all the way into the hole! Turns out the left lamp and the right lamp are two totally different bulbs and even sockets. What's the deal with that? Was one headlamp assembly replaced altogether or something? The one on the left had 2 leads, the one on the right had 3 leads. The wiring harness for the bike has 3 leads on BOTH sides.

*EDIT* Turns out after looking around that this is normal, only one lamp is a highbeam. Still wondering why the highbeam side only works with the highs and not with the lows, even though the bulb is good.

You'll need to mod your head lights to get the low to come on the right side, BD43 has a cable to attach to the right head light to make it work on low beam. The left head light has a h4 bulb, while your rights side has a h7 bulb.

Hmm, so I'm taking it that everything is correct on mine? The right low beam is not on normally?

The bike actually comes this way, but if you search the forum, there is a way to hook up the low beam on the right again so that both will be on.

Looks like the previous owner took the center stand off. I'd look into getting one if you can, makes garage maintenance much easier. Most of the "tuneup" work that people are mentioning here is good advice and can be done yourself to save a ton of money. I'd definitely get new tires as well as soon as you can.

As for the paint scheme, I owned a 2006 and that is definitely the 2006 paint scheme with black frame and silver forks.

Pre-07 didn't have cats in the headers.

My 06 had a CAT in the mid-pipe and from the photo it looks like his mid-pipe is expanded to facilitate a CAT.....
