Here's how the build went.....
Swing Arm --- It was an ebay item for the amount of $450. This included the wheel, chain,shock, and everything related to the swing arm. I ordered the VFR 800 swing arm, which is way too wide at the bearing cups to fit the FZ frame. So I took the stock swing, and cut the piece of round stock that houses the bearings off, ground it back round, and welded it in the VFR arm. Of course I had to make sure I had the sprockets lined up, and the wheel centered with the front. The shock mount was also relocated. It took a bit of work to get it under correctly. I then painted it satin black in color.
The sub-frame. I cut the sub-frame completely apart. Removed the rear-sets, and just about any bracket you can imagine. I then had to make all the mounting points for the new upper R1 race tail and seat.All mounts were made out of 10 gauge steel. I spotted everything together, and put the tail together about a dozen times before I was happy with the angle at which it was sitting at. All wiring/brackets occur under the seat now. It was painted a satin black as well.
The tail itself started out life as an '08 R1 race tail. I then shaped modeling clay, to form the male plug for a mold for the undertail. Once I had the fiberglass undertail, I bonded the two halves together. There is a bracket inside the tail that cradles the tail lamp. That's what the two rivets are for on both sides of the tail.
Forks: I found a complete front-end off an R6S. I didn't want to use the FZ6 trees, so I had a sleeve turned, and pressed into the upper tree to allow the FZ6 steering shaft (I had to press it on the lower tree) to be used with the R6 stuff. I had to relocate the steering stops as well.
Headlamp: I bought this from Vishnu on the forum. It was reasonably priced and I think it looks awesome! I had to do a bit of fab work to shim the light off of the forks, and I had to cut down the side covers to clear my clip ons. The kit included the mirrors as well. I'd recommend him to anyone as a seller by the way. What a great guy to deal with!
The clip-ons are ebay items. They are completely adjustable, which proved invaluable during the build.
Exhaust: I'm still up in the air on my exhaust. I made a super short muffler that's baffled. It's 3" exhaust pipe, with a stamped steel weed-eater tip. The baffle is 2" exhaust pipe with about a hundred holes drilled in it, then wrapped in steel wool. I had originally point it at the rear tire, but figure that would be a big no no. So I pulled it back off and welded a slight bend into the assembly. It's very loud, but has a nice tone to it.
I'm on the look for a used set of round pipes..... like akropovic or such. I'm thinking about cutting the header pipe further up, and having pipes sit right under the motor, possibly concealed with a belly pan.... We'll see.
