Making my own gps mount

So I was lurking around here looking at what some other people have done to mount a gps on the fz6 and with some internet searches I came up with a idea. A very rough idea might I add. So my idea is to make a bracket that will attach to the handle bar riser bolts and replace them with some longer ones. The bracket will have a 2 bends on to create a height and then a surface to mount the gps it self too. the picture kinda shows what I am thinking the blacked out areas would be cut out, don't know what any of the sizes would be yet just something i was thinking about sitting here. So feedback? good or bad! I might be missing something as to why it wouldn't work so let me know! Thanks!

Also sorry for it just being on paint dont have any fancy cad on my computer! ha
 
While I admire DIY projects, I am in love with my Ram Mount X-grip. Works great, and I can move it from my bike to my truck to my Miata using the same arm and grip. It's priced pretty well, and isn't device specific. I could hold a GPS or any smartphone with it.
 
Yea I was looking at those also. Might be a good back up idea. But this wouldnt be to hard for me to make just would have to figure out all the sizes and make it on my work comp and waterjet cut it out! hopefully i can whip one up by next weekend
 
I do admire your drive to engineer something, but some battles are better left to others. There are already a ton of solutions out there. I mount my Magellan Maestro 4250 with a handlebar mount from flea bay, I think it was five bucks.

Having said that I know that designing something useful brings with it extra satisfaction, so if you do go ahead with it, kudos to you and good luck!
 
The first pic was the original mount I made but it wasn't adjustable for the mount I had (I made it from stock "L" aluminum.

The next pic's are what I currently have and is adjustable (the angle, height). Custom made, center stem bolt with threads, swivel Techmount arm ( TECHMOUNT - Home ). I made the 90 degree bracket that attaches between the Techmount and ram mount.

Powerlet, ( Powerlet Products - Rugged power outlets, cables and electronics ) made a custom 12 volt to 3.6 volt Mini USB, wire adapter, which is hardwired to the bike.

The last (and current) version stem nut was custom made, with the company's INTENSION, of mass producing them for the Yamaha market.

The nut is too small to be made in a machine automatically and is literally one of a kind. I informed them I could likely get them a bunch of business(that size nut is used on most yamaha's) but they ASKED I don't do that as they won't make anymore (too labor intensive).

This set up, I can move the GPS depending on lighting conditions..

I bet if you contacted someone in china with the specs it would be possible and cost effective?

All they'd have to do is get a stock stem nut (which I did so the bike wasn't "down"), figure out the thread pitch and machine one up with a threaded center to attach a stem mount to...

As I recall, they dropped $50 just in the tap, not counting the machining, I was quoted and charged $20 (or $25) US for it...
