Looking at a used 05 - not ridden much

I'm getting ready to look at a 05 with about 3500 miles. The current owner has had it for a year and only put about 100 miles on. He has ridden it about once a month just around his neighborhood so I doubt he's been out of 3rd gear. Is this bad for the bike?

Also, I notice in a photo that the the exhaust pipes are pretty discolored where they come out of the head and curve down and under the bike. This is normal isn't it?

Thanks for the help. I'm new to sport bikes and new to the FZ6 although I have ridden one before and really liked it.

If you buy it, I would suggest, given the little riding it has seen in the past year, the following.

- Check the tires and tire pressure, make sure they are safe and make sure they have not gotten brittle from sitting around.
- Give it an oil and filter change.
- Check all of your fluids.
- Go to Welcome to Boneman's FZ6 Site, get the service manual and do all of the 3500 mile service checks.

With regard to the discolored pipes, that is normal blueing caused by the engine and exhaust heat.

If it has the original tires I would replace them no matter how good they look (tires get old just sitting)
About time for a new battery
Change all fluids including brake fluid.
Low miles can be hard on a bike (or any machine).
Use these points to get it down to 3K

I bought a used ninja 250 that had only been ridden about 100 miles in the past year. It was garaged indoors, started just fine, looked just fine, and rode just fine. After purchase I took it straight to the dealership for a check up and all they said it needed was an oil change so it was still in good shape.

However, it would be nice to get a couple 100 knocked off the price just in case. But, depending on how the seller is he may think the opposite and that he deserves more $ since he hasn't put many miles on it.

I wouldn't worry about the 3rd gear thing. I'm sure the owner before him had plenty of higher gear fun with it!

Oil change and bleed the brake fluid....least you have to do..:thumbup:

He started at $4800 and is now down to $4000, which is below the KBB that I saw from the link above. He might come off a couple hundred more so I will test the water on that but I think he's getting to what he thinks is the bottom.

Hard to know on these things, but then he hasn't sold it yet so maybe he will reduce further.

I just found out some more info. He has had the bike for about 3 years and put 500 miles on it during that time!!!!!

That just doesn't seem like it could be good does it?

He has kept it stored inside so I suppose a good thing is that it hasn't been in the sun and therefore some things are better off. But I would think this just can't be good.

What do you think?

I just bought a '05 with just under 9k miles....i gave 3500 for it, had to put tires on it, they were the original and the previous owner only rode the highway. I have been very happy, its my first bike and I commute on it (120 miles round trip) and its very comfortable. Also gets about 50 mpg which is nice......Dont know if this helps.....Good luck!

IMO - I'd pay about $3500 max for the bike as is.

I'd worry about it having sat for 3 years and only 500 miles. If you just really really want the bike see if he'll take it down to a shop for a look over. Offer to pay for that part of it at least (just to get a maintenance quote from the shop). Then use that price as part of your negotiating down the price. Think of it as like getting an inspection when buying a home!
