Holding in my hands a Sunstar 15 teeth front sproket, number on the back: 390-4628.

Problem: it says that it's compatible with:

"FZ600 FZ-6 04-09
YZF-R6 03-05
YZF-R6S 06-09
(520 conversion)"

However, online I can see this for the very same sprocket:

Part#: 390-4628
POSITION: Front
# OF TEETH: 15
FITMENT:
Yamaha
FZ-6, 2004-2008 - Conversion 530/520
YZF-600R6, 2006-2008 - Conversion 532(525)/520
YZF-R6, 2003-2005 - Conversion 532(525)/520
YZF-R6S, 2006-2009 - Conversion 532(525)/520

How is it possible that the sprocket works both with 530 and 520 chain? Please, what do you think? I don't want to install this on my 530 chain and kill myself.

It will work just fine its just that 520 chain is a little lighter and smaller...no worries

In case anyone is interested. Both 520 and 530 are 500 series chains, same pitch. The second number is the width and if you have a third number (525, 532) indicates a stronger chain. So you can use a 520 sprocket with a 530 but not the other way around.

I'm going to have to go against both of you on this one.

Will a 520 sprocket "work" with a 530 chain?...Yes.
Is it recommended?...No.

520 Chain Inner Width = 1/4"
530 Chain Inner Width = 3/8"

The variance in width can lead to premature wear, mis-alignment, and, in worse case scenario, a chain "walking" off a sprocket which is too narrow. If this was a 35HP dirt-bike; probably not an issue. With a near 100HP motorcycle, I would stick with a matching Countershaft-Rear-Chain Combo.

My $0.02

I'm the OP:

I went back to the dealership. Turned out that yes, they do have a part number for the 530 Vortex 15T, and ordered that for me. I decided that I'd rather wait until Monday and do it properly, than take any kind of risk, small or big. Thanks everyone for the input!

FYI, Sunstar is the company making the OEM sprockets for Yamaha, and they do not carry a 15T that is for 530 chains, but only for 520 chains. Hope this info is helpful to someone in the future.

Exactly. Just because it'll work doesn't mean it'll work RIGHT, or SAFELY. If you're stuck somewhere and that's the only option, then you use it to limp home, then repair it properly.
