Except, that producing all those batteries will kill the environment with the amount of nickle and what not produced.

Everything has a pro and con. I think the world is looking for an option than has no cons, and its not going to happen. Give and take applies to everything.

First, hydrogen doesn't do a damned thing to get rid of our oil dependence. We make hydrogen from crude oil. And if anyone here says anything about hydrogen being free power since it's made from water, I will track you down and throw up in your lap.

You're right. Right now most of the hydrogen is made from oil, or from coal powered electrolysis.

However, that doesn't mean hydrogen can't be produced cleanly. Check out the Hynor project in Norway for example. (Hynor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) They're testing several methods of hydrogen production. Some clean such as solar electrolysis, and some not quite so 'green' like Natural Gas reformation. Still a good bit better than coal fueled electrolysis here in the states.

Technology is a wonderful thing. In the short term it won't reduce our oil dependence, but in the long term it has a lot more potential. It's sure better than not doing anything.
