Is it just me or is my gearbox clunky

Hi,

This is my first post to this forum. I've just returned to biking after a two year break. My brother has bought a fz6n 2005 model as his first bike and we're going halves on the insurance and maintenance to help him with the costs and bring his insurance down a bit and so i can get back on the road.

I've taken the bike out a couple of times and have noticed that the gearbox is a bit clunky. I'm not sure whether its me or just how they are on the fz6.

It seems fine coming down the box, but going up is a whole different story.

Any tips on how to stop it (That's me or the bike) would be greatly received.

1st to 2nd or 2nd to first will almost always clunk... the other gears offer smoother shifting at higher rpms (usually above 6k)... for a more advanced tachnique try searching preload or clutchless

Don't worry its not just you. Every fz6 does it. It doesnt seem to be as bad if you preload the shifter first. I also found shifting faster makes it less clunky.

They are known to be slightly clunky. Does the bike need an oil change (it gets worse with older oil)? If first to second is the worst, try to put a little pressure on the shifter before you let off of the gas and pull in the clutch that will smooth it out a little.

Higher RPMs and smoother clutching from 2nd to 6th. 1st to 2nd, YMMV.

I found it helpful to switch to Royal Purple Max Cycle oil.
It's a full synthetic and is slippery as heck.
It does not fix the 1-2 shift but does help it to not be as clunky.

Hi,

Many thanks for all the replies. I had the bike serviced before having it delivered so hopefully (if they really did service it) the oil should be new.

I'll try the preloading method and see how i get on with that. Still, even with a bit of a clunk it's a fantastic bike.

Yep. When I go slow and take it easy there's always that obnoxious clunk. When I barely nudge the clutch and almost think about letting off the gas it seems to go quite well.

Welcome mate,

The gear box is a little agricultural (typical Yamaha). Things that have helped me a little.
1. Change oil brand.
2. Correct chain tension.
3. Correct idle speed.

When first started driving my Fz6,an '06, the clunks drove me bugs. After I got used to higher RPMs, I did not seem to notice as much. Put some miles on it, then decide, GRUMPY

I just changed my oil last night and used Golden Spectro. The mechanic at the shop said it would quiet down the tranny. WOW.. what a difference for my FZ6. It still clicks but not nearly as bad as it did with conventional oil.
