This is why soccer, excuse me, "football", will never be as big in NA as it is in Eurpoe.....because we hate bad acting, spastic, wossy athletes. :spank: So much for honor and intergity amongst competitors...

Granted, so-called flopping exists in basketball. And drawing a foul, baiting an opponent, or embellishing for effect occurs in other sports—something Lalas is quick to bring up. But said instances are no where near as notorious (or as laughable) as diving in soccer. Even so, it’s no excuse for tolerance (aka “But everyone else is doing it”).

Personally, I feel 'diving' ranks right up there with fighting in baseball....lame!
 
LOL, that comment struck me as very humorous. I think you have a point there plus other reason like we (NA) like to see actual scoring of points and do not get off on all the fancy stuff going on between the goals. That may be why channels like Redzone are getting popular with Americans. Just cut out all the BS to get there and just show us the actual scoring play.

On another note, I don't think NA realizes just how talented and skillful these soccer players are that they are watching and that is why the games are usually low scoring.

Mehh. I'll lose that battle. Soccer is ok, diving players are not.

Just be nice if some of these players had some sportsmanship and integrity that's all. What they are doing sure isn't helping their sport or image.

The majority of players are amazing atheltes and the ones who dive/fake just tarnish all that IMHO. Problem is it's almost becoming 'acceptable' and all too common and perhaps even expected. There in lies the problem.

Same with my baseball fighting comment. Baseball fights are the worst fopaux in sports and everyone follows the same script.
1. batter gets mad at pitcher for whatever reason
2. batter charges mound KNOWING that all he has to do is stand toe to toe for 5-7 seconds before his entire team is out there to back him up.
3. repeat again and again and again..... (zzzzzzzzzz)

Wow, you guys are so tough. Heck I'd charge Frank Thomas knowing that in a few seconds my entire team will be out there to save my ass!

Does it represent honor and integrity when Kobe Bryant tries to fake a foul every 35 seconds? Are the hockey players showing a lot of sportsmanship when they start fighting every 5 minutes? Isn't Baseball the "wussy_est" sport in the World?

Not trying to start a sport's war, just trying to make a point: players at that level are humans just like you and me, which means that there will always be some of them who will try to cheat, fake, etc to win. It's not just in soccer.
 
True Dave and it's probably not fiar for me to single out soccer for this, but you have to admit, diving/bad acting alsomt seems like a scripted play in scoccer.

Sure there are dives in hockey and other sports, but you don't typically see a player hurling himself though the air and flopping like a fish holding his face when no one was withing 5 feet of the guy! When you think of that, you think of soccer, not hockey, footbal or baseball.

And yes, Baseball is the "wussy_est" sport in the world! :thumbup: You gotta love a sport where even the players are bored off their asses....
 
Oh yes, I agree that fake diving in soccer is pretty ridiculous... but it IS part of the game (just like Kobe's fakes) and the referees WILL give you a yellow card if you get caught faking it (happened 2-3 times in the World Cup already).

I don't know if you've ever played soccer, but diving has multiple purpose depending on the game and situation... sometimes you do it to try to get the other guy a yellow/red card (because he's a much better player than you, so you got to find something to do lol)... sometimes you do it because you're trying to get a penalty (shoot-out), sometimes you do it to waste 2min of the game because you're leading and don't want the other team to catch up (generally happens in the last 10min of the game)... sometimes you do it because you're in real pain (soccer shoes against ankle hurts)... and yes, sometimes you do it because you're a wuss :)

There's stuff like that in all sports though... as soon as there are trillions of dollars involved, you know the "sportsmanship" isn't the players' priority anymore (unfortunately).

Hands up who thinks Luke O'Donnell took a dive? When one of these men hits the ground its usually for a pretty good reason.
Note how they get straight back up & not roll around on the ground like they have just been circumcised with a blunt object.
