Idle speed - Should I increase it?

The alternator output voltage is more close to nominal value when the idle speed is set as required by the manual. So you should increase it to protect the device receiving electricity.

I've never had a problem with charging the battery or keeping it charged, thats with using a Widder electric vest, arm chaps and gloves during the winter and the BD43 dual headlight set up...

Out of curiousity I just checked the voltage on my bike:

Cold bike- static, not running -13.18 volts (approx 2 year old Yuasa OEM battery)
warming bike (high idle) approx 1350 RPM's -13.92 volts (charging)
warmish engine (about 130F) at 1350 RPM's -13.20 volts (charging)
warmish engine (at about 130F) at 1,000 RPM's -12.70 volts (not charging, drawing slightly from the battery)

***These voltages are WITH BOTH LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS ON**

So yes, at 1,000 RPM's you are drawing some from your battery vs 1300 or so, your slightly charging.
5,000 RPM, max charging..

If you do a lot of sitting in traffic, setting the RPM for 1,000 is obviously not good for the battery..

I found the idle speed is related to the charger voltage at idle, ie , at 1300rpm, the voltage is the nominal value. If a lot of electric devices are on your bike, you'd better adjust to 1300rpm.

I started mine without touching the throttle and it was idling at around 1200. If I revved it a few times then let it idle it was varying between 950 and 1200. That's not at normal temperature yet though.
