I got a problem

per the FJR site I frequent, their repairing the oil pan with a "time sert" without problem. It uses the same size metric bolt(I own an 07 FZ and an 04 FJR)...

Ok so I went to napa and the guy suggested I should try [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-81668-Stripped-Thread-Repair/dp/B000AL4WAS/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_i"]this[/ame]. Possible applications did include "drain plug thread repair" and the whole thing was just $9.60 so what the hell ... I decided to give it a shot although I was 99% sure paste will not work Well, what do you know - I was right ... it did not work I thought I'd share my experience and save some other noob $10

The guy was generally pretty helpful though. We tried the bolt in a bunch of thread samples and it turned out to be 14mm x 1.5. So I'm gonna go to home depot and get a 16mm x 1.5 tap (that's the next size up) + a 14,5mm drill bit and a matching 16mm x 1.5 bolt + gasket / washer. Tomorrow I'll take the exhaust and oil pan off and I'll wait for a friend of mine to come over for the weekend and use his drill to do the re-tapping. The only real problem I have so far is that my oil pan gasket is not likely to arrive before Monday so I'll miss another weekend of riding ... oh well

I checked out the Timesert vids after I posted about helicoil. The Timesert looks to be a viable solution. Mainly because of it's flange and locking mechanism. I'd probably add locktight to increase the seal between the insert and the pan.

I Just read AGirl's writeup on the timesert install. I like it. It is sound. That would be the easiest route but my be more expensive than a pan/gasket by the time you get tools and the kit. Price both out and choose your path.

Ok guys, so I ordered the time-sert kit on the phone on Thursday and it arrived all the way from AZ on Saturday. Thanks heaps to John for the ultra-fast shipping+delivery and for helping me out choose the right kit for the job.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
If any of you is planning on getting a time-sert kit to fix whatever make sure you order the right one. I first ordered an M14 x 1.5 but it turns out there is a difference between that and the "M14 x 1.5 drain plug fix" kit (Time-Sert repair kit #1415A) so make sure you call John @ 877-591-3770 before you order. Not all available kits are listed on ebay/amazon so if you wanna buy - best call first.

That said, I am glad to say the oil pan is now fixed and I am just waiting for my oil pan gasket to arrive in the mail hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday. I am really tempted to put the old one back on and just ride but I think I'll wait till tomorrow. Also, I think I will just reuse my exhaust gasket rings as I forgot to order new ones and I don't think anything bad will happen if I use the old ones (which look in pretty good shape).

Thank god one of my closes friends came by to help me out (or should I say to do 90% of all the work).

I have one bad news though. I told you I was gonna make a little how-to report and I really did start it. The problem is that at one point I had to go to Sears and buy some additional tools. Nothing bad in that, right? Well, not if you forgot your brand new Canon camera on the roof of your car. So yeah, at one point I realized my camera was missing and after I gave up looking for it we finished off our oil pan work without taking any pics. After we were done I had to give my friend a ride home. As we came out of my driveway he saw some little black device splattered on the asphalt right next to the curb. And that's how my drain plug has cost me well over $400

So yeah, the oil pan is fixed and the time-sert worked like a charm. The only drawback that it has is that you will likely use the whole $120 kit one single time.

Oh and also, I am so so glad that my friend convinced me to take the oil pan off before doing all the drilling, re-tapping, counterboring, etc. There was no way a simple oil-flush would have cleaned all the little pieces stuck in the corners and on the walls of the pan. It took quite a bit of air and brake cleaner to clean it up.

Glad to hear the time-sert worked out for you. Kinda expensive however you now have steel threads in there which is considerably stronger than a new stock oil pan..... You also have the tool and if need be, fix others pan's for a couple of $ or re-sell the tool...

The exhaust gaskets should be ok. If you hear some leakage, time to order some parts but you should be ok...

Sorry to hear about the camera, s... happens...

Great to see you got her fixxed up. did you end up using all 5 timeserts? With the extent of the problem, you may be able to get your money back over time. Just keep your eye open for people needing a repair and charge them $40 or so to borrow the kit. I know if I find the pan stripped when I crack that bolt, I'm messaging you All I have here are helicoil kits and we know how I feel about them for this app.

No, you're supposed to use just one. The drain hole is about 14.5mm in depth and the time-sert that comes with the drain plug repair kit is 12mm; just enough to get nicely embedded in there without being too short.

As for landing the kit - I won't be charging anyone ... I'm not that kind of person I guess If any of you guys on this board are willing to come and pick up the kit to do a repair - I'll be more than glad to land it to you. As I said it's the 14mm x 1.5 drain plug repair kit and I have 4 time-serts left. Also, by mistake I ordered 2 oil pan gaskets (don't ask me how did this happen) so once they arrive I'll have one extra that I can give you in exchange for a beer I also ordered a brand new drain plug that I won't be needing as the one I have at the moment is perfectly fine.

So if anyone needs any of the parts listed above I'll be more than glad to help you out. I just called the guys from boats.net and they told me I should receive everything by the end of the week (yeah another summer week with no riding :rant: )
