The turn signal relay provides the on/off blinking action to the turn signals. If the bike doesn't have a turn signal relay, then yes you need to install one. Simply bringing a hot wire to the turn signal switch will cause the signals to be on without the on/off action.

And you can probably just buy a generic 12-V turn signal relay and use that. The wiring shouldn't be too hard. Some advice can be found here:

I had a 86 FZ600 (great bike by the way) and can confirm 100% that it
had auto blinkers...typically the way a circuit like that is wired is:

12V from fuse to flasher unit and thumb switch, activating thumb switch
energizes control circuit of flasher relay, flasher relay alternates on-off to
send voltage to signal bulbs

if it aint working and you are sure you have 12V out of handlebar switch,
either you have wiring problems, or a dead flasher unit....

a schematic and 12V test light are your friends here, only way to do it without guessing

Yes... Yamaha or you might also cross reference the part number and replace it with an electronic type for future LED type indicators so that the flash rate will be correct.

you can get a cheap universal relay at any parts store for around $4.00.

I used one on my old 1996 katana 600 and it worked perfect.
