Not the best year for VFR. 2002-2005 had some issues with VTEC, if I'm not mistaken. 06 and up are supposed to be better.
Best models are actually the generation before 2002 (1998-2001).
They are all known to suffer from rectifier/regulator failure (can also lead to stator failure). There are aftermarket wiring harnesses made specifically for these bikes which many say cure the problem, but some say it's the heat that causes it and the problem is bound to reappear.
Maintenance is pricey and if you choose to tackle big jobs yourself (valve adjustment, for one), it's not easy.
Having said all that, I've ridden my friend's 2000 VFR and I think it's a fantastic bike. Phenomenal exhaust note (he has Yoshi pipe on his). More torque than FZ6, especially down low and no handlebar vibration. If I was touring, I'd rather be on VFR for sure. In the twisties though, I think FZ6 has the upper hand.
