Hey everyone, I'm Adam Boersma. I live in grand rapids michigan, and I'm a 21 year old kid who's nearly done with college. This is going to be my story. I'm going to update this thread, along with a blog that I'm making.

You can find the blog at AdamsFitnessStory.blogspot.com and I'll keep updating pictures (even though I'm honestly going to be really emarassed to take pictures without my shirt on for a while... :(

Anyway, my story.

Through high school, I was captain of the drum-line, and this gave me great exercise. That coupled with a relatively high metabolism meant I was extremely skinny.

Here's a picture of me back in high school so you know what I mean when I say "skinny"... Keep in mind, I don't want to go back to that weight...

Compare that to now... this picture is of me and my niece on my '02 sv650s

I'll post pictures up on the blog later tonight of what I'm starting with. I can't as I'm at work right now.

So what am I doing about it?
Well working out, of course!!!! I'm going to start P90X tonight, as I figure it's perfect doing 90 day workout, having 84 days til vacation.

For the blog, I'm basically just going to take what I post here and copy it there. Or the other way around... don't care. :p

What I'm asking from you guys is to keep me accountable... ask me how the workout's going... I know I'm only 21, but I feel it's something I need to do for myself and could use an extra push...

Thanks!!!

Hi Adam!
What a great way to keep yourself motivated and have the support you might need to push through the tough times.
What are your goals? What is your start weight/size and what is your goal weight/size?
Best of luck to you!

Start weight and size are approximately:

Weight: 180lbs
Height 5'11" (I know I can't change this, but it gives an idea to the height/weight ratio)
Pant Size: 34-36
Shirt size: 15.5 neck, 35 arms

Goal
Weight: 165
pant size: 32-34 (I want to drop 2" in pant sizes)

Other goals: Drop this spare tire around my belly!!!!

I just want to look and feel better...

Hey man that p90x thing is pretty intense. I started it a while ago but i dropped out :/ hope you go thru the entire thing. Good job committing to it by announcing it to everyone. If you stop half way, we will never forgive you or talk to you again :BLAA:

Sounds like you have an excellent plan! I really like the blog idea. Remember on P90X, don't bonk mid workout! Protein can be your friend too :). If you have a smartphone, there are great apps out there for tracking your daily nutrition intake, like calories and such. Livestrong.com also has a great daily nutrition tracking web app you can use.

Good luck! I will help keep ya going when I can :)

Good luck my man! 15 Pounds is nothing to lose in three months. Just eat healthy (and stick to >2000 cals a day) and exercise and you will have no problem. In my junior year of high school I went from 180 to 155 in about 5 months. Maintained that for about a year and then slowly crept up during college. Now I'm right about 200 pounds and am starting a new diet and fitness regimen. My goal is to get down to 170. I've built some muscle in the last few years so 170 should be pretty cut for me. Oh and I'm 5' 9"

Great! I was there 2 year ago too. I lost 20 lbs in 3 months and brought my cholesterol down from 220 to 163. Doc wanted to put me on medicine, I told him that I'll come back in few months!

I basically cut everything with more than 5-7% saturate fat or cholesterol. I didn't diet, just didn't eat fatty food. And I started running. I was already going to the gym.

Running has been working great for me. Never been a runner before but I did one of those couch to 5K 8 weeks Apps, worked great! Since then I did many 5K, 10K few 1/2M (my favorite) and did my first full marathon last December. Running will be a good add on to your training (+/- 1000 calories/hr)

I turn 40 right after my marathon. I'm 163-165 lbs @ 12% body fat. Planning to get into Tri this year. It's getting way too hot to run here in Florida now anyway... I need to work hard on my swimming skills.

Keep up the hard work and don't forget... you need to get in shape to get in shape! That mean don't start too hard, you'll quit! I heard a lot of great thing about PX90. This is a very good way to go... But if you haven't train in years you might want to take few weeks to "wake up" few of those muscle...

Good luck, I'll be following you in your journey

I dont know if you have any in your area but an MMA or boxing gym really kicked my workouts into gear. It almost like p90x except with better instruction and more variety of workouts to entertain you. I tried p90x and couldnt get motivated. Supposed 1000 calorie burn in a one hour scheduled class. I believe it since i threw up the first three times from exhaustion and im not in bad shape. After a few weeks of it though you drop weight and feel outstanding, especially punching a bag to get out frustrations from the gf :)

I dont do it anymore since i moved to the beach and now i just jog the beach and hit up 24 hour but i do miss it a lot and might start up again soon.

Good luck and remember weight loss doesnt necessarily mean better shape. A lot of people get stuck on losing pounds but if you replace it with muscle, lung capacity and endurance the wieght doesnt matter as much

100% agree! I did Muay Thai for few years. If you can find a good school/gym this is by far the best workout you can get. It's the perfect overall fitness training you can do!

i train at a crossfit gym and have also started doing catch wrestling (mma)

i also train on my own in a normal gym, but it can be hard motivating yourself sometimes, especially to try and push really hard

Thanks for the input everyone!

I came to the decision on P90x because of my schedule, really...

I'm currently working full time (8-5), and going to school more than full time (right now the equivalent of 21 credit hours), along with a full time girlfriend... it's hectic to say the least.

My workouts are going to be early morning, probably (after tonight, of course).

Since I have to be in at about 8 am, that means I'll be getting up at like 5:30 or so to do this. I don't get home most nights until at least 10pm, and most places aren't open then.

So for now, P90x it is! I'm going to weigh myself tonight, take a few measurements and post them to the blog and here, as well as some pictures.

I really do appreciate the suggestions, though!

New blog entry over at Hi, I'm Adam. This is my story.

I'll post it here too!

Day 2: Ow...

Alright, so I did my weigh in and pictures last night so you guys know what I'm starting out with. This is also motivation for me as I can look back at it and see where i came from.

So without further ado, the pictures and weight...

And the weight...

So this is what I'm starting with. It's not extremely bad, but not where I want to be.

Day one was chest and back. Needless to say my chest, arms, and back are EXTREMELY sore... I honestly didn't want to get up this morning, but needed to for work. There were lots of pushups/pullups, but overall I really like the P90X system. Tony is funny at times, and I can see where I need to improve.

I'm starting my diet today as well, going to go for a salad with baked chicken and olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette dressing at lunch.

A couple of side notes: I think I'm going to weigh myself once per week on sundays, just after church and before lunch. It'll be easier to keep track of things that way.

I'll make sure to take pictures every 10 days or so as well.

I think that's all for today. I have to do Plyometrics after work... I've heard it's the least fun of any of the workouts.

Gotta stick with it, though!

good luck! you are just under 100 lbs less than i weigh. i also tried the p90X and dropped out after a week, the plyometrics are quite difficult, your legs will be sore for a long time, but that's a good thing right? again, all the best of luck!

Day 5: Getting into the swing of things

Wow, it's already day 5! I'm almost through the first week of the workout routine (though I think the second week will be the toughest)

So far I've done Chest and back, CardioX (as an alternative to plyo), Arms and shoulders, and yoga last night. Tonight is legs and back, which I think will go fairly well.

I've decided to do the workout at night. I'm finding it easy enough to make the time for it, however monday and tuesday are killer for me for the next two weeks, so we'll see how it goes.

The soreness that I felt day 2 is slowly starting to go away, but I'm still finding myself hitting what I like to call "pain spots". Spots where I move just right and I get an urge of pain throughout my core or legs. It feels good, to be honest...

Last night doing yoga was INSANE it was like 45 minutes of working on your arms, legs, and core straight... I cannot see any way I'll ever be able to do that the whole way through! But isn't that what P90x is about?

While I can't really see any results (posting pictures day 10), I can definitely feel them. I feel like I walk more upright, have more confidence, but it's still tough getting through these workouts!

Anyway, lunch is over. I'll try to update this as much as possible.

Keep it up!

I remember doing the P90X yoga. First time I did it i was like ahh yea this is gonna be nice and relaxing. After about 2 hours, I was like "WTF I didn't think Yoga was supposed to hurt like this!!!!" lol. The stretches and calmness at the end feel soooo nice though.

The hardest thing for me is the diet thing. There are way too many quick and easy things we can eat, but the majority are not healthy for you. A good quality whey protein shake after each workout wouldn't hurt either to help with recovery and muscle growth. I might have missed where you said that, but if you are, good!

Remember, most of this is a mental thing. As soon as you lose motivation, everything goes to crap (as what happens to me every spring). Sounds like you have a good goal in mind and this should help a lot with that. Keep at it, hit it hard, and eat healthy.

Congrats on the commitment Adam. I guess this would be a better time than ever for me to make a commitment as tax season is coming to a close. Being a year out of football I definitely feel out of shape so I need some goals to set.

Here is what I am thinking to gain some athleticism/confidence back.

-get enough balance back to do 15 squats standing on my swiss ball
-at least 275lbs on barbell bench
-250 pushups without stopping
-50 towel pull ups
-3 mile run without stopping (25 minutes max)

seeing as though there is much work to be done, the goal is 3 done by August, 4 by October, all done by 2013.

Thanks for helping me finally force myself to choose some fitness goals as well Adam! GL:thumbup:

Just remember man, even if it seems tough, push through because you will have the next 23 hours to recover. Also stretch extra, especially like in the shower when your warm, irt will help a lot. Do everything you can not to miss one, because as soon as you miss a workout, your body will find it contagious. One last note, if you are looking for a little extra, wake up a little early in the morning and do s hort jog before you eat anyhting, that is the best time to lose weight.

Ill be here for ya, I know how hard it can be especially at the beginning of a routine

Good on you for wanting to get back where you were! About 20 days into that p90x and my responses to Tony turned to "F*ck you Tony!" lol its intense! I'm also tryin to lose weight... I was friggen 285 5' 11 last September and so far I've gotten that down to 220, goal being getting my fat ass under 200 to start lol... It's definitely doable if you keep your heart in it and don't get down on yourself!
