have a problem with my fz6

I'm new to this forum and thought I might be able to get some help with my bike. I tried starting it today and the hi temp light and engine warning light came on, I switched it off and tried again but the same thing. The engine starts but the revs don't move and the red ignition key light stays on.
Don't know what to do, don't want to risk riding it. Also says error _1 and sometimes error _2. Need help soon because its my only transport.

Er_1 and Er_2 are due to no signals being sent from the ECU. Check the wire harness at the ECU to make sure it's connected securely.

Lift up your tank. Do this by removing the two allen bolts either side of the front fairing and take the black fairing pieces out (they prevent the tank from lifting.)

Then remove the two bolts holding the tank down...when they're out you can lift the tank right up (just dont lift too high as you'll see there are wires and hoses connected to the bottom of the tank and you dont want ot damage these). You can hold up your tank using rope from the top of the tank to the pillion grab rails. The ECU is right there in front of you, its the small black box with a load of wires coming out of it. Check to make sure the connection to this box is secure.

found ECU in owners manual but doesn't show picture or say where connections are. May have to have a poke around in the morning. Its been raining here and the bikes not covered,(never affected it before) but you never know maybe got water on the connection?

Out of interest, are you still under warrenty?

Water shouldn't be able to find its way to this part of the bike. Its completely covered by rubber from underneath and the tank from above.

You might also try to disconnect the battery. (Just the Negative lead) for a few minutes. Reconnect the battery and see if it does the same thing. This should reset the ECU if it was a glitch, but indeed check your harnesses and connectors.

I would also use an ohm-meter to check the coolant temp sensor.

Coolant temperature sensor
5.21–6.37 kΩ at 0°C (32°F)
0.29–0.35 kΩ at 80°C (176°F)

If it has shorted out, then it would indicate a really high temp (higher temp = lower resistance) which would tell the ECU to go into "limp-mode".

Any chance you have a code-21 showing?

If the sensor checks out then you might have a short in the harness...which now that I think of it might also explain the err-1 and err-2 codes.

Hi everyone who has helped, I ended up taking it to the shop since it was way overdue for a service anyway and they found out that it was due to the battery not holding its charge which I suppose was causing the ECU to show that there was an error. Don't really understand why I wasn't having any trouble starting it but its working now and it got me off my arse to get the bike serviced so all's good.
