the fuel price rise is really becoming a nuisance. the uk govt needs to reduce the tax is charges us for the fuel.

These guys are screaming for a rebate for official businesses, but not the average consumer. Those prices are outrageous but things aren't that much better in the states with prices (from what I've heard) breaking the $4 per gallon mark. Still better than the UK with the exchange rate and liters to gallons...but not that good....actually wait...something like $2 per gallon better. OUCH!

The government doesnt need to reduce taxes, the oil companies need to quit rolling in it. After the 1st quarter this year they made something like 300 billion in profit!

THe senate has been meeting with the oil higher ups, but they keep blowing them off saying that they are pinching costs and they are hurting too.

One day the government will wake up and realize that have to put a cap on fuel cost because it is actually hurting the economy.

Oh and you are correct it is up to 4.00 a gallon. I paid 4.15 for premium a couple days ago!

And another thing, I believe some owner operators tried to protest in D.C a little while back. They didnt have enough support to make it work, however if the trucks would stop running just for one day. It would wake some people up. Because when the trucks stop, the country stops and they are the ones that are paying for it the most.

Thats allegedly paid for with the road fund liscence that we all have to have. £120.00 ish for the year for the FZ6.
+ Charlie if fuel increases at this rate the maintainence trucks wont be able to move any way. We are doubley screwed.

What we pay on fuel tax is about 70% of the actuall cost of the commodity, this all goe's to the coffers.

I would hazard and guess that the money goes no where near the road constructiona and maintenance. As has been said already we pay the road tax.

IMO, if any government reduces taxes, it will lose income which will be exploited by the oil companies, not the consumer. In other words. Tax goes down -> prices stay the same. Government taxes are now named corporate profits. Don't give them any more ideas....

The UK is pretty small in terms of road miles by comparison to the United States.The Federal tax on fuel doesn't begin to cover the sum total of what it costs to build and maintain Federal roadways. The States have much the same issues and while the rise in fuel costs has increased the amount of money available, it has not offset the backlog of maintenance or road construction. Do some research and find out exactly how much your relative government is actually spending on those roads both local and at the federal level. Here, they are two different entities.

Local roads are funded by local councils and are paid for by locals plus Central government grants.

National road building is funded by fuel tax/road tax. However they make 4 times more than they spend. This does not include VAT (@17.5%) which applies on top of the cost of the fuel and fuel tax. So it is taxed twice.

I could not have put it any more pocket painfully clear my self.
You forgot to mention that also each month every household pays on average £100.00 for the pleasure of inefective waste collections, street lighting and the od fire engine.

Not sure what the answer is but this relatively small group are threatening to cause chaos for all of us. I do sympathise with these owner/drivers, but they are looking at it from their point of view not everyone's.

Most of the extra taxes appear to be going to keep our boys in Iraq and Afghanistan.

as far as it is, haveing a bike and with gas 92 or higher the most it could be roughly $16-18. But it is getting way out of hand. It would be nice is the IRS would let you right your gas off.

The biggest rip-off is price of diesel! It used to be always the cheaper fuel. Now, it's almost $1.00 more a gallon. WTF? Sure, diesel engines are more efficient but now since one pays so much more, it's not cost effective. WTF? Buying diesel nowadays is like pumping super, octane fuel. It's way more expensive than premium gas. WTF? These are cocaine prices folks. Bend over as in HavBlue's avatar. WTF? Next thing you know, gasoline/diesel companies will reduce the size of measurement units (gallons) as ice cream companies have done with decreasing the size of "1/2 gallon" to the 1.75 qt and (now just appearing)the even smaller 1.5 qt size ice cream cartons. WTF? Yeah, I say "you watch out Americans, pretty soon US oil companies will market gasoline---as everywhere else---in LITERS. And you won't be able to figure out the cost difference very well. WTF? Tell me I'm wrong. I'll bet that corporate officers are considering this very move.

Diesel is so expensive right now because they put stricter emissions regulations on it, as such a LOT of the current diesel refineries can't make diesel that meets the new requirements. Fewer refineries capable of making legal diesel = higher demand for it. So until all the old refineries are retrofitted or new refineries are built diesel will continue to rise in price.

I also highly doubt that they'll switch to liters as their measuring system. They tried it in the past and it didn't work, they were practically forced to go back to the US system.

Wolf Zero: We'll see! Sizes of candy bars, ice cream cartons, jars of pasta sauce, (and there are others, I'm sure) have all decreased. This makes higher commodity prices less painful, less obvious. As far as the country coverting to the metric system, yeah, this flopped in the 70's but I was referring only to new marketing of fuel in the U.S. An odd holdout from the 70's is the continuing liter size of soda. At any rate (aside from our debate) I wish U.S. would join the rest of the world and go the more logical metric.
