Handlebar ends

does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the stock handlebar ends? i have others that i would like to install, but i'm not too sure how to get the stock parts off. i don't want to crank on the ends too hard to unscrew them (as the guy at a local bike service dept. suggested) for fear of breaking something.
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Put a BIG allen key in the end and wind them off! You won't break anything.

Yup.. just use the big hex key (ignore the little alen bolt head inside the end of bar end).

Its easiest with an allen socket and ratchet. It comes out like any threaded fastener

If you're not planning on reusing them, and you don't have a allen wrench big enough, just get a pair of adjustable pliers, bite down hard on the widest point (right beside the grip) and unscrew them that way. It WILL scar them up, but if you're not going to put them back on at any point, it's easy to do.

BTW, whatever method you use, you're going to really have to crank on them to get them to move. I remember the first time I took mine off, I didn't think I'd EVER get them loose. If I remember correctly, they use red loctite on the thread when they install them (it might be blue, but damn it was holding good).

thanks for the info! i'll take a crack at it in the morning and see what i can do, assuming i can find a allen wrench large enough. if not, i may make a trip to the hardware store.

When I removed mine I used a 1/2" drive allen bit and a long handled 1/2" ratchet. No trouble removing it at all. I'd strongly recommend getting a set of bit sockets if you don't have them already. They're so much easier than trying to use an allen wrench when the bolts are torqued down tight.

I just used a 8mm allen wrench I think and turned them right off

wish mine they used red loctite on mine... my right one came off and is now missing.... unless for some really odd reason someone stole just the right one....

You need to have LEVERAGE. A really long wrench may be enough. I use an allen key with a long pipe over it to make it much longer. VERY easy then.

Or you can use an impact wrench that you bang with a hammer. If you don't already have one, it's not really worth buying one just for that!

i got them a couple days ago by using a big allen wrench. they weren't on all that tight. the new ends are on, i'll put pics up soon. i'm working on some other mods right now, so i'll just put up all of the pics at once.
