Gauge Cluster Clunk

Hi all,
New to the forum--I have owned my FZ6 for just a month now. It is quite the upgrade from my vintage 1980 Honda CX500.

Upon riding it, I immediately notice a clunk when going over bumps that seems to emanate from the gauge cluster. It is the exact same clunk that I remember from my brothers KLR.

I had the front fairing apart this weekend for the dual headlight mod and to replace a broken turn signal--now the clunk is slightly louder!

Any of you also experience this noise? How did you fix it?

I need to take the fairing apart again and was thinking to use some sort of foam tape over the metal mounting bars. Thoughts?

I appreciate any input!
 
Welcome to the forum!:welcome:

If the bike is new to you, I would go over it with a torque wrench and start checking nuts and bolts.

If you still cannot find the clunk, usually, some slight to medium smacking with a closed fist (bottom soft part of your hand) to the fairing in various places should help you locate the loose part. Check the main fairing stay also, two bolts at the head of the frame, for tightness.

I probably would keep away from foam tape unless absolutly necessary. It tends to hold water and with that, rust..

I did have one fairing screw way up towards the nose (right at the pointy part)that loosened up just a tad to make an annoying noise (not a clunk). Nothing a new, aerodynamic hole in the main stay (covered up under all the plastic) a long phillipps head screw driver couldn't fix!

I'd pull the nose off and inspect it all.

With the supplied Allen wrench, pull the inner fairing.
Unplug the 2 harness connections on the left
Turn bars left, remove lower pinch bolt at steering head (do this from the right)
While holding the fairing, remove the top bolt. These are 12mm caps.

Walk away with fairing - done in 5 minutes.

The gauge should not rattle. I'd find out why and since its a used bike, its time to check ALL OF THE FASTENERS! The nuts holding the mirrors tend to fall off...

5 minutes and you have great access!
 
If it's that easy, maybe I should check mine too. I need to fix a broken turn signal anyway. The plastic bit that the metal bracket screws into broke a while ago. I glued it back together but it just recent broke again. I'm going to need to figure out away to fix it permanently.
 
I would check:

1. head bearings
2. fuel tank front two bolts loose
3. I find with a helmet on, it's hard to tell where the noise is coming from, and would then suggest the center stand, especially if the rubber bumper is missing, it clunks nicely over bumps.

Brakes: not likely, on smooth roads I never hear the clunk regardless of braking.

Fuel tank: not likely, I had that lifted twice this weekend.

Head bearing: suggest a test for this?

Center-stand: will check this.

Will check whole bike to make sure there are no loose bolts. I need to put frame sliders on this weekend anyway. Does somebody have a link to torque specs for the bike?

The engine mounts are 40 Ft lbs.

Also, when insalling sliders, make sure you have at least the same amount of threads sticking out(on the sliders) as the stock bolts. Some sliders have been too short and the Op ended up stripping out his engine block :( ..
