Game of - what is this wire for (86 FZ600)

Have a couple of disconnected wires that I am trying to find a home for. This one (green connector) is a weird one. 3 wires coming out from the horizontal blade and 2 (red and black) are just bare ends. Any thoughts? Not even sure that it is stock, but I have not tried unwrapping the harness to see where the other 2 wires wind up. Note - this bike did not come with a stock airbox, so if there is a sensor on that then it is likely for that.





2 here. Pretty sure that the one with the wire tap on it is the remains of the kickstand switch wiring since on the other side of the bike the kickstand switch is dangling and its connectors are missing. The one I am curious about is the black wire with the ring terminal. Would assume it is a ground, but no idea where it should be hooked up. Not long enough to reach the battery.

You should procure a service manual with a schematic that includes wire color codes. Then you will be able to ring out the wires with an ohm meter.

You could disconnect the negative lead on the battery. Use your ohm meter to see if there is continuity between that wire and the frame/engine. If no connection try continuity to the negative battery lead.

There is continuity between the round ring and the negative battery lead. There is also continuity from both sides of that green connector to the ground lead on the battery. Really looking for someone that has an fz600 with a specific answer about these connectors and where they are supposed to be attached. (assuming that green one is even stock)

If there is no continuity to the frame of that black wire but there is continuity to the negative lead you could attach that wire to the frame/engine. This would likely give ground path to other components that use engine/frame for negative grounding.
You could look at the schematic for clues as to the green connector. If it disappears into the harness under factory wrapping it'd likely be a stock plug and the color code might give you a hint.

I’m very glad to see your project on this forum, but do know that this forum is dedicated to the 2004-2009 FZ6. We are happy to guess at some of your questions, but real advice will come from a dedicated FZ600 message board.

With that said I’ve always have been a fan of the mid to late 80’s FZ’s. I was just out of college at the time and had no money to buy one. I wouldn’t buy my first post-college bike until the early 90’s and by then sport bikes were transitioning to a completely different performance product.

Yeah, been looking for a dedicated FZ600 forum I wound up here because there was a pretty long FZ600 rebuild thread here, from 10 years ago.

Hey all !

This summer was time for my first bike and I fell for an 86 FZ 600.

Started with this video:

I went and saw the bike and being a little too excited / a bit naive, I bought this sellers story of "near mint". It stalled out on my first ride home. The bike would only last for about 10 mins before dying completed and I was left stranded multiple times. Not a great start with my first bike. (

So I went over the bike found all kinds of garbage. Missing bolts everywhere...

In any event. The green plug is for an optional California only "carb air pump". The long wiring is definitely the kickstand switch and I am still trying to figure out where that ring terminal ground should be attached.
