Fuel Meter

I bought my bike in the begining of May and have ridden almost every day since. When I picked it up it had a full tank of gas. I rode around on that tank for a while, then ran out of gas. It was my own stupidity for not reading the owners manual first (I was excited!) but I did notice the fuel guage was not working at all when this happened.

When I finally ran out of gas, the only thing showing was a full tank with one bar gone. I had 5 or 6 bars showing when I ran out. Since then I haven't payed a lick of attention to it. I've just been going by my trip odomete that I reset. This doesn't really bother me, since I rode for 2 years doing this just fine on my old bike.

However I do feel that on a bike thats only 2 years old with less than 5k miles on it, the guage should work. I know they are often times innaccurate on bikes because of the system they use and the way bikes lean. Is this the case with everyone elses bike? With a full tank of gas, it shows full. But as I continue to ride, say 100 or 120 miles, the guage doesn't show any sort of decrease in fuel level.

Mostly I am just trying to determine a baseline here before I go any further with this issue.

The gauge is pretty accurate, but when I'm trying to get the most from a tank, the odometer gives me a better estimate of my remaining range.

The fuel gauge has 6 bars, so measures in 6ths of a tank.
The odometer reads in tenths of a mile, and I get 200 miles to a tank, so it reads in 2000ths of a tank.

I have an 08 that I purchased new in Aug of 08. It currently has 16k miles on it and the gas gauge works with no problems. I average between 45-50 mpg.

Depending on the way I ride, when the fuel meter comes on I know I can go all the way up to 225 miles give or take on the normal trip meter. This equates to 50+ on the fuel meter.

There is something wrong with the mechanism that determines the amount of fuel in the tank or the sending unit to the odmeter (rough guess). Other's here my have more info. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I don't have any issues using my odometer, but like I said I just wanted to see if this was the norm or not. Looks like something isn't working right.
