Front brake switch issues

hello everyone I am brand new to the fz6 world buy just buying my first bike ever a 2007 FZ6. bought it for $1500 from a impound yard that was actioning it off. Overall I got a great deal it had been dropped while not moving it appears so it was missing both front and rear footpegs on the left side as well as the left side mirror. I did some searching around nd found I could get thee pieces for around $120 dollars so I didnt think that was that bad. Well anyways it appears the original owner kept this bike outside and didnt give it much t.l.c. it is very dirty and and shows a little bit of weathering for only being about 3 years old. it was a young kid owner and I think he just beat on it. So anyways heres my dilema. The front brake lever has some play ain it and wont go all the way forward for some reason. I have searched all the post on here and found one with a similar problem but not much solution. can anyone help me. This is really a pain the mpmentum of driving forward causes the lever to not touch the brake light switch making the light look like im always pressing the brake unless I push my fingers out and hold it forward which is a pain since this is the throttle hand. Can anyone please offer some advice other than changing the lever the switch and the brake resevoir housing. thanks in advance for any help

Good score! A FZ6 for under $2000 is a sweet deal! You probably just need to bleed the brakes (air in the lines). It's easy, and there are posts to tell you how.

I doubt the switch is keeping it from retracting. There's one screw holding on the switch. Remove it and see what happens... If the lever still doesn't extend out fully, remove the pivot nut/bolt and pull the lever. Check and see if there's something lodged in there (maybe from a crash).

The part of the brake lever that releases the brake light switch (small piece that sticks straight down and actually contacts the switch) must be square (90') to the lever.

If its bent in it'll keep the brake light on and also keep the lever from extending out fully. I suspect its (the tab) bent in from hitting something.

townsend was bang on.. it was driving me crazy yeserday and I went to yamah to see what a working brake lever looked like. after seeig it i went home and looked at mine it was a bent lever. I took it off and could really see the bend in it. I took some pliers to it and just bent it back as best I could an dit works great now I will just need to add that to the list of a few things I need to replace on it. overall I still feel I got a killer deal the bike rides like a champ just needs some cosmetic t.l.c. thanks for all your help guys im glad to be apart of the FZ community

Awesome deal but a not moving drop sounds like an extremely tall story considering the damage done, unless he dragged the bike home on its side after dropping it.

Also if your having issues with the brake light being on, check your rear brake, I had my dealer play around with mine, since it was either too high or too low on the normal teeth settings, and they didn't fix it, but they bent the spring in the assembly down there, and I ended up with a permanent brake light on till I fixed it. If the lever was shorn off, this might have happened.
Otherwise definately flush your brakes.
